This is back on my dash! And listen, I love to see Amir Khusrau getting appreciation, but this translation ignores a lot. The original rhymes! And scans! And does playful things with register! And conveys a tone of affectionate banter between the two speakers, not least because it has them both addressing each other as sakhi (translated above as “girl”) in the last two lines. I think taking some liberties with line order is worth it to preserve more of the rest—and I think there’s a better translation of sakhi. And so:

He only visits once a year, I splurge big on him when he’s here, His kisses make my tastebuds tango. Who, bitch, your man? Nah, bitch, a mango.

I think it's so important and crucial for 20 year olds to witness older people who are genuinely bad at some aspects of being a person but are still living lives they find meaningful and enjoyable. Not just "oh I got married and you can too" but like. sometimes you cannot for the life of you finish college or find a good job or stay in a relationship or arrive to locations on time or whatever it is you think when you're 20 that you HAVE to be able to do. But you wind up finding a place in the world anyway. It happens!

For everyone who ‘used to love reading’ but now hasn’t finished a book in years, you CAN get it back. Genuinely start bringing a book (preferably short and either fiction or a non fiction topic you already really enjoy) everywhere you go and when you have 5-20 mins waiting for the bus or at the doctors office or mechanic or whatever, get out your book and read it! You don’t have to finish it quickly or even read it often but it is so good for your brain and fun to get into the habit of reading more (and replacing being on your phone for those moments). What i really like about My Neighbour Totoro as a movie is that it focuses on capturing the daily life of its main characters and how much of that is naturally interwoven with the moral of the story.

The main moral is to have respect for nature, spirits and each other. To coexist with nature and to not be afraid to rely on eachother.

I like how this movie depicts a life where these things are at the core of each character's being already and it helps them solve an issue that's to come. It's a stark contrast to how a lot of western media depicts its morals, which usually goes along the lines of "there's a big asshole with different morals, there's a huge conflict and now everyone realises I'm right and has the same morals as me."

I think it's really worth talking about that aspect of western (US) media when westerners say they think Studio Ghibli movies are "cosy", despite depicting a lot of serious and scary events. These morals are more about living, rather than winning.

The same approach is applied to anti war movies like Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises and Howl's Moving Castle. "War is bad" is at the core of them, but this isn't a moral that gets challenged with a big conflict from a big evil. The war doesn't get won in these movies by the main characters. The conflicts arise from trying to live through it. Even as active participants in the war, there never is a doubt that war itself brings nothing but grief and despair.

It's a clever way of writing and I wish more movies wrote their stories this way
