Anyone who is a long time follower of my postings will be aware that I am very anti- live feeder fish. However, I have absolutely no issue most of the time selling live feeders. I understand that there is a need for them in many situations.

Some animals when they first come in won’t eat anything other than live, and need to be weaned over to non-live foods. Others are simply fragile in health, and live foods are a great way to stimulating their appetites, and then we can switch them to non-live foods. Some animals simply won’t eat unless it is live. 

We also have rescue groups that rescue wild animals that come to us time to time to buy feeders. For them it is easier to buy it through a good pet-shop than try to keep the feeders on hand.

Still, if an animal can switch to something else, I firmly agree with the idea of doing so. Feeder fish can have a whole host of problems associated with them. The worst of it is related to feeder goldfish. These little things can host parasites and show no symptoms for several weeks. They are a major host for a protozoan parasite called Heximita. They also can cause long term deficiencies in animals because they host an anti-nutrient. High in saturated fats, they can also increase the risk of early death from heart, and liver failure. Basically feeder goldfish are bad news bear no matter which way you look at it.

They also go through probably the worst abuses when they are not sold as feeders. It’s so strange to say this, but the animals that go out to be eaten had a better life than the ones who are bought via sympathy or otherwise, and then shoved into a tiny enclosure where they slowly die a horrible death sitting in their own urine and feces. Feeder golds are still pond fish, and when kept alive long term need ponds, not fish tanks.

It is easy to feel helpless against this issue. Many people insist on them existing as feeder fish. I am here to say that our voices matter, especially those people working at pet-stores. I started out by educating customers on why the feeder goldfish are less than ideal. When faced with the facts many were happy to switch over to something else. Some of them actually stopped feeding live feeders period as a result of being given proper information.

As people began to change their buying habits, I put pressure on the people in charge where I work from within. Stop selling them. We don’t need to sell them. They are not good for animals as feed. In time I got the approval to no longer carry “Large” feeder golds. Eventually we ran into a major issue with the small golds coming in as feeders. So I isolated them to their own system in a less visible area. The dwindling number being bought has dwindled even further. Faced with the problems they have coming in, and the problems they create for animals they are fed to management has begun to slowly accept that we need to phase them out entirely.

As less and less people buy, and more people are educated the demand is dwindling even more. In a few months I may have successfully won this deeply personal battle of getting goldfish off the feeder fish menu...at least for the place I work at.

Just think if more people took up the torch where they worked, and also began teaching their customers why feeder fish are problematic, and why the feeder golds in particular need to be retired as a thing of the past? Think of the changes we could have in a decade. Our voices matter.

Here are my babies! One the left you can see Tango digging for foods Maestro hiding in the back, Angel in the middle, and the two no names keeping eachother company on the right. You can see on Tango's side where he's missing some scales and Maestro has a couple missing as well. Their tails have splits in them and Maestro's has a couple jagged edges. Angel seems pretty well off but there are some white dots on the gills that I'm not really sure about. I'm going to do some research before bed to make sure it's nothing to be scared of. Finger's crossed it's just fish freckles. The other two seem to be doing ok and don't show a lot of wear or damage. The gold one likes to be on his own when resting but doesn't seem to mind a friend. I really like his buddies pattern because the white looks like a city scape against an orange sky (names for these two are more than welcome!!!) But like I said in my Fish Homes post, I really want to get some proper plants in with these guys and give them the perfect home. I know they'll need a pond eventually and I'm moving them to a bigger tank asap, but any tips, links and/or pointers would be EXTREMELY appreciated. I'm learning more and more about goldfish as I go and I want to keep learning so I can give these guys the best care I can.

This video is about overfeeding animals. While the video does a nice general over-view I wanted to go into things a little deeper here.

Overfeeding animals doesn’t just lead to the outward signs. As it pertains to fish here are some of the common consequences.

The first relates exclusively to feeder fish. Many people over-do it on the feeders, and as a result set their tanks up for bad water quality on a regular basis. This is because, number one the amount of waste increases. It may simple be because the feeder fish lead to more noxious waste, or because the fish are eating when they are full, and pushing predigested food out to make room for new food.

A second consequence is a higher chance for hole in the head disease, or lateral line erosion. The HiD disease is often linked to Hexamita, which is a protozoan parasite. It will exist inside the fish’s gut, and initially not cause problems. However, the moment the animal starts go through any sort of stress, it is more likely that the immune system of the animal dips. This then allows the parasite to start to wreck havoc. It can go so far as to travel to other parts of the body and this is where the pits, and eroded face look starts to set in.

This is completely avoidable if, number one the animal isn’t over-fed on feeders concentrating the parasite in the host, or increasing the potential for exposure. This also means cleaner water, and a tank that isn’t as difficult to keep up on. That in turn means less of a chance for stress related to bad water quality.

There is also another dangerous side effect to some feeders such as Goldfish, and minnows. It is also shared with foods such as beefheart. These are high in saturated fats, and in excess lead to organ failure, such as a fatty heart, or enlarge heart, and or liver disease (fatty liver disease). So even if you were over-feeding and keeping up on stellar water quality, and kept stress levels down, the fish will still die early, and possibly painfully because of the internal problems.

If that isn’t enough the two fish species mentioned can concentrate something else that leads to a problem with nutrient absorbing. So, in conclusion on this, the more you stuff your animals with feeder fish, the faster you are killing them.

Beef heart also tends to be something people over-feed to encourage fast growth. If an animal is growing faster than it’s skeleton can properly keep up, you can end up with a brittle skeleton that is easily injured.

Any type of over-feeding is bad with fish. It leads to water quality problems, and if over-fed on the wrong foods has other issues as stated above. So why do people do it? As stated in the video my prominent theory is that people have a dissonance in their head because of their own human habits. For some, that turns into bad habits with their animals to try to settle that dissonance. That means feeding more often, and more food.

Many animals don’t actually appear to be able to tell when they are full. Not like humans, anyway. If animals in the wild are always foraging because they find small bits of food through-out the day to equal what they need, then they are more likely to eat everything that is offered in captivity.

It is up to us, the people in charge to make the right decisions, and to put our own dissonance to the side. We must recognize that our animals are not always going to mimic our own habits 100 percent, and it can be dangerous to expect otherwise.

I hope you all learned something, or at the very least remember it’s okay to speak up and try to educate people when they enter the hobby, or are first time pet-keepers. Education is the key to prevention, and the key to helping people make the best choices for their pets!

Fish homes

I have 5 feeder fish that were rescue fish from petco. Someone bought them, moved states, and left them outside to freeze when winter hit(we’re talking regularly -30 temps) and the neighbors took the fish into petco because that’s really the only place for fish here. Ive had the fish for awhile and havent had the space or time to give them a huge renovation home wise. But im moving in a few weeks and will have the space. So i want to start a proper aquascape for them. They’re in a 25 gallon tank right now and im hoping to move them to a long 50 gallon once i move(I have the tank but it needs some serious TLC cleaning) Can anyone point me to any websites or blogs with good info on keeping a healthy aquascape and healthy feeder fish? Im sure they’d prefer some live plants instead of all plastic…. Any help is EXTREMELY appreciated. I really love these guys and want to keep them safe and healthy 😕

The first murder-night happened when the turtles decided to eat them, all 5 of the magnificent 5 in one night. The only thing left was some fish scales floating around the edges. I bought them 3 little feeder fish, as a treat. They will eat a fish in the wild but I'm betting that they are smaller and much harder to catch so raw fish can be a treat rather than a food staple. I stopped the pyramiding on their shells by changing their diet from what they had been eating from the previous owner. he had the diet all fukd up and it was too protein rich with absolutely zero plant material. red slider takes a 50/50 spread, 50% of the diet should be plants. Their diet is now balanced and even though the pyramiding can't be reversed but it can be, and now is, arrested. Anyway, so far the three musketeers have avoided being eaten. So today we name them the musketeers. Which is which I will have to keep an eye on them to tell which one is donatello And which one is d'artagnan.

watch, as soon as I name them they will become dinner. if I had specified I wanted goldfish they would have cost three times as much. I only paid 65¢ a piece for feeder fish. so if you are hunting for some cheap goldfish ask for feeder fish lol. they were little and they were black. now they are almost as long as the turtles and have turned completely gold.

maybe the turtles are farming them. waiting until they are big enough to eat. I might wake up to floating fish scales again, someday.

but so far that's not today.
