Here's my question. What do you think would change, if Snape was female?

Because... like... I don't think it would change much? His family trauma doesn't seem to have a specifically *gendered* component... his bullying from James - maybe does? Like James might bully a Fem!Severus differently? (Or then again, maybe not.) Fem! Severus would still be weird, poor, dark arts/slytherin aligned, not attractive (to James)... but also a big draw on Lily's time and affection in a way that James wouldn't like.

I don't think it would changed his relationship with - Dumbledore, the Malfoys, Lupin. Bellatrix might... possibly hate a Fem!Severus more? Like see her as more of a rival? But she already does seem his as a rival, so. I'm not even sure a Fem!Severus would dress or wear her hair any differently.

Very interesting ask. 👁️👁️ I agree that not much would have changed but I do see a few little things here and there which, once you addition them, could make her act a little differently...

Childhood

She would still experience a pretty miserable life at Spinner's End, but she might have felt a bit less awkward with wearing her mother's clothes, thus making her maybe a bit less socially stunned.

She would still meet Lily and not get along with Petunia.

Hogwarts

You pointed out the most important and obvious point already: the bullying. Not that it would have not taken place - guys can absolutely bully women - but considering the time period I suspect Sirius and James's pureblood upbringing would have influenced the way they interacted with Fem!Severus.

First, their first encounter on the Hogwarts Express might have been less aggressive. I think James and Sirius would have been taken aback and super weirded out by this poor, unpleasant and ugly girl, but I don't think they'd have insulted her as harshly/tried to make her trip or nicknamed her. Maybe some things would have been salvageable then - not talking about friendship here (pretty impossible) but just... being civil?

It's pretty certain James would have still been jealous of Fem!Severus for hanging around Lily but he wouldn't have needed to prove he had the bigger pair - which was a good chunk of what it was in canon imo. He would still tease her and ridicule her verbally in front of Lily but maybe less viciously. Fem!Severus would still fight back so this could escalate to jinxes but still, it has the potential to be way tamer overall.

As for Sirius, I think he could have seen some of his mother in Fem!Severus, which could have resulted in either: wanting to bully her even more OR unconsciously trying to avoid her. I can see her making him super uncomfortable. I'm personally leaning toward the latter option. A man he could be violent with - no problem - but a woman? Hm. I'm unsure.

If the bullying was lessened, then I don't think it would go as far as the Prank or SWM, because pantsing a girl, even one you really don't like, even one who might be interested in the Dark Arts, seems super extreme coming from two pureblood boys. The 'boys will be boys' excuse functions better between all boys in this instance. I think this would have felt ickier for everybody around them. Tho if the Prank did happen, Dumbledore wouldn't move a finger either, that's for sure.

No SWM means no 'mudblood' incident. This being said, I don't think her relationship with Lily would have changed much. What drove them apart isn't related to gender and it's pretty clear Lily wanted to distance herself anyway. SWM was an excuse so she would find another one.

Also less bullying doesn't mean she wouldn't become a DE because she would still crave a place and be susceptible to Riddles' promises.

First War

I do wonder how it would have changed her relationship with Lucius Malfoy tho? As a young man he may have kept a bit more distance between them as to not start rumors? So maybe she would have gotten less support from him? But maybe she could have become friends with Narcissa and it would have been the same (I like that idea).

Dumbledore would have maybe been less harsh with her when she first came to him or when the Potter died, since he would maybe project less of himself and Gellert in her... but he would definitely have still manipulated her the same way. Dumbledore is a lot of things, but he's not sexist.

Harry

Later in life, since she wouldn't be as traumatized, she would have been less triggered by Harry's resemblance to James, thus making their relationship less disastrous. She would be cold and distant but less cruel. She would also have been able to teach him Occlumency more successfully, which could have changed quite a few things plot-wise...

Second War

I also agree with the idea of Bellatrix being jealous. I really see it. She would certainly try to slander her/hex her viciously in order to get rid of her. This would have maybe made Fem!Severus' work way harder. Maybe this would have resulted in her trying to get rid of Bellatrix.

I wouldn't be surprised if during the Second War many DE thought Voldemort and Fem!Severus were somewhat of an item. He was pretty fond of Severus after all... and if Bellatrix proved to be too annoying and Voldemort ended up getting rid of her it would rightfully start some rumors. Maybe Dumbledore would have tried to encourage it even? I don't know if that's really his style but I wouldn't get it past him to suggest it at the very least.

Conclusion

So... yeah. I don't see this many changes (I may have overlooked some things). Severus is already pretty female coded in many ways (his writing, the way he talks, moves, his interest in potions, the way his (very valid) feelings are dismissed etc.) and in a Fem!AU, many interesting things could be explored in the way people would interact with her.

But I do think she could be less traumatized and more self-assured. Maybe she would have enough mental energy as an adult to create spells and potions. She wouldn't dislike Harry as much and maybe have a bit more self-preservation in regard of Dumbledore's plans for her. I don't see her being ready to sacrifice herself as fully as canon!Severus. She'd have a few backups.

But she would still wear a grey nightshirt.

And have pretty perky little boobs.

Inspired by @fafodill 's musings on fem! Snape, I grabbed my tablet and did some sketching. I absolutely fell in love with this character all over again.

bc like the thing is sapphic snily with transfem snape is two marginalized girls/women who have deeply hurt each other in ways colored by the bigotry associated with their unique intersectional position in the world and even if they couldn't understand the world around them or themselves they still possessed a deep, all consuming love for each other that they clung to for survival...they were both mistreated by the same man with lily as the prized, ideal madonna who exists to be chased and won for the validation of the man who gets while snape served as the metaphorical whore, an acceptable woman to abuse and violate, whose purpose is to be a receptacle for patriarchal violence (even if she didn't know she was a woman yet everybody knew she wasnt a "proper man" and treated her accordingly)...when they meet again as adults, even if they're more wise and superficially self assured, that love/heartbreak fueled by naivete is still felt but beyond their access it's a deep ache a wound barely scarred over its of their cynical adult lives, their childhood bond, and the political meaning of their lives all coinciding with each other YOU UNDERSTAND THIS YEAH?

I hc Fem!Snape's name being "Severine/Severina Corveila Drusilla Edith Dymphna Scholastica Prince" <3 (About like four of these r from Catholic saints, but so's Severus, so I thought… Why not?). She was actually born intersex and takes hormone stabilizers, but is also extremely androgynous

Fem Snape is the exact copy of her mother, Eileen!! Tobias genes didn't even fight back, tbh

Changed their surname the moment they could. Tobias never found out, Eileen was surprised, but VERY pleased

Due to Severina being underweigh, she rarely get's her menstruation; Whenever she DOES, though, it's not for a very long time and often asks her house mates for pads.

Due to being Asian, she was often fetishized by older guys, muggles and magical; It once even came out out of a shop-keepers mouth at Diagon Alley, and Severina never entered that shop again

Marauders still bullied her, although, not as harsh, due to the Marauders having the misogynistic beliefs of "girls are fragile" kinda thing, esp since Sirius had witnessed domestic abuse against women in this AU, and Peter being Russian-Mongolian, kind of had many unhealthy misogyny-themed mindsets

When she was sharing dorms with Dorcas Meadowes, Dorcas often noticed Severina straightening her 3b-3c curly-coily hair, which reached her collarbone, but waist-length when straightened. Dorcas offered to braid it multiple times, but Severina refused multiple times

The Black sisters lowk all adored her; Bellatrix, being a 7th year when she first met Severina, Andromeda in her 6th and Narcissa in her 4th. Narcissa and Bellatrix used Severina as their dolly, and Bellatrix sometimes sent her goblin-made daggers and shurikens, whilst Narcissa once got her an entire wardrobe of feminine, pretty dresses, esp after finding out Severina takes great joy in goth, v-kei, decora and other dark fashions

Andromeda noticed her talent in curse-breaking and healing, so she taught Severina multiple curse-breaking and healing techniques, especially for girl-issues (menstruation, ovulation, etc), which Severina later used to help other girls! Narcissa often combed through Severina's curls using the herbal stuff Andromeda made

Sirius reminds her of the boys that fetishized her and attempted to assault her at loads of occasions, before finding out that he apparently never (sexually) harmed a girl and once beat up a guy over it. The only time she felt respect for Sirius.

Was a late bloomer, started blooming VERY late 4th and early 5th year. Grew SO much more taller and looked more feminine, but still androgynous

Learnt how to crochet and sew early on from other Asian ladies from her neighborhood as a 'tradition', so Severina knew how to sew her own stuff and crochet. Severina re-sewed her own uniform, making it extra gothic and adding more cuffed sleeves, lace skirt, tighter around the waist, etc. She eventually took commissions from other girls. Her prices were; Fully costumized uniform set; 1-3 galleons Evening wear; 2-5 galleons Custom robes; 2-4 galleons Magical outwear; 1.5-3 galleons Magically reinforced stuff: 1-2 galleons ADDED Hemming n basic altercasion; 3-5 sickles Adding lace sleeves or anything similar; 6-9 sickles Custom gothic corset on the uniform; 12-18 sickles Crocheted gloves/choker or anything similar; 4-6 sickles Full crochet shawl; 12-16 sickles (NOTE: These are 1980's prices, which is EXTREMELY different from now)

Severina sent whatever half she had left to Eileen, transferred into muggle currency, charmed not to reach her father. Eileen was always grateful, sending crocheted stuff of her own, food, thrifted stuff in return

Tobias, despite Severina being a girl, taught her muggle fire-arm, and gifted her own custom gun (since Tobias has connections through military) at 11, same with grenades (different types, some real some fake) and a gun license few months later during yule break. Severina always carried the gun, just in-case. She also always carried the obsydiain, cursed Prince dagger, a family heirloom of the Prince family

Severina, whenever she wore makeup, always received 'lipstick on a pig' comments, especially from the marauders, which made her insecure. Lily always shut them down, constantly threatening but never acting

Her skirt had a pair of sewn-in shorts! She often did a similar requests with other girls, and did it for Lily for free, a day before their 1st day at Hogwarts. Lily also told the Gryffindor girls about Sevina's connections/skills! The Gryffindor girls eventually went to her and were super gratefful, esp Marlene, who needed some customization to her stuff

Sevina was unfortunately a victim of SA and physical abuse multiple times throughout the muggle world, mostly from much older boys/men that took advantage. That made Severina very terrified of men and had a phobia, to the point she once had s C-PTSD attack, caused unintentionally by the Marauders. Pomfrey, because of that, made her go through a forensic exam test, and she was outraged when she found out

When Narcissa found out, after Severina had a breakdown from her nightmare and vented it out to her, Narcissa became MUCH more protective and guarded, hexing any boy who said something out of line. When Narcissa graduated, in Severina's 4th year, Narcissa and Severina met up every two to three weeks at Hogsmeade, sometimes with Bellatrix tagging along.

Severina's entire friend-circle is mostly; Lily Evans, Charity Burbage, Aurora Sinistra, the Black sisters, Wilvara Helena Wilshade Wilkes (oc), Dorcas Meadowes, Pandora Rosier, few girls from the muggle world, Bruce Mulciber (Aurora's half-brother), Evan Rosier (Pandora's twin), Wilhelm Wilkes (Wilvara's twin brother), Regulus Black and Barty Crouch Jr! :3 Marlene McKinnon also, but she's barely there; She respects Severina, and wouldn't mind being friends, esp w/ how often she commissions her. Mary Macdonald somehow tries to befriend her, no one knows why

Is Neurodivergent, unfortunately; Has OCD and Autism

Takes a lot of prescribed pills; Two for C-PTSD (one monthly one daily), one for autism, one for OCD, one for social anxiety, one for insomnia, one for chronic pain & also pain-killers, hormone & mood stabilizers when needed. Also a bruise-healing balm and vitamins due to being malnourished and anemic

Pomfrey often makes sure she's taking them and not developing an addiction; Was mortified when she found out about all the experiments she kept doing on herself when it came to spell-creation and potions

Bullimic due to poverty, an anorexic mother, toxic weight expectations and a horrible body/face dysmorphia from a shit ton of things

Eileen was a prima-ballerina, so she often made Severina do those impossibly hard stretches and built up her pain tolerance. She also taught her how to play a harmonica, grand piano, cello and a violin. Tobias taught her drums and synthesizer. Severina later was taught drum/bass guitar by Tobias' friend, before he died. Eileen wanted for Severina to have multiple career options

Created a shit ton of lethal skills against abusers. Her most lethal one, cut off genitals and gave you insane amunt of pain, without driving you mad, like the cruciatus curse <3
