lawmane with fem!L is an insanely captivating dynamic that makes for such an underrated ship, especially when you consider the conflict (and later balance) that can be born from this bond.

L and misa are entirely dichotomous characters—not just in appearance, but in personality, temperament, beliefs, values, and motivation.

their primary differences present as follows:

while L is wholly uncaring for social norms and conventions of any kind, misa vehemently adheres to heteronormative standards and even uses them to her advantage.

where misa prioritizes fashion and beauty, L is detached from and not swayed or fooled by outward appearance.

misa is hyper-feminine; L is lazily androgynous.

misa would struggle with comphet, internalized homophobia and misogyny, whereas L is arrogant and perfectly comfortable with herself.

misa is focused on the physical and emotional world, and her motivation is primarily extrinsic. L is focused on the happenings behind the scenes, the inner-workings of other people, and her motivation is entirely intrinsic.

misa is chatty and bubbly; L is impassive and intellectual. in accordance with this, misa thinks L is a weird ugly recluse, and L views misa as ditzy and annoying.

…all things considered, they really shouldn’t work well together at all.

and yet.

i believe that misa could learn a lot from fem!L that could help to change her perspective, and the same can even be said for L.

for someone like misa, who’s spent a great deal of her life yearning for the attention of men in order to feel safe and desired, believing that the key to achieving this is through being conventionally attractive or by competing with other women, i can only think that it’d be refreshing for her to meet someone like L who does not care for her own nor others’ appearances in the slightest.

finding someone who finally looks at you the same, whether you’re all dolled up or dressed down, since they’ve seen past your appearance from the start? that’s freeing; that’s comforting. it’s startlingly intimate, whether you want it to be or not.

L’s presence would be begrudgingly relaxing to misa, and her contrasting beliefs would help misa to start living for herself, instead of for the eyes of others.

as for how L benefits from this relationship?

L is a person who has a phlegmatic temperament, tinted with melancholic edges, so it only makes sense that she’d benefit from misa’s intense and reactive nature. this contrast in behaviour would bring out L’s passion (in a similar way to how L’s relationship with light does in canon) and help her to get her out of her head, while also helping misa to mellow out on the days where she needs it most.

because misa isn’t merely ditzy and chatty—she’s also very often feisty, challenging, impulsive, and fiery. she has a bite to her and is intelligent in her own way (let us not forget that she threatened to kill any girl who so much as went near light + devised an entire plan to record higuchi’s kira admission).

misa’s a bit deranged, and she has hidden depths to her. once L discovers this, i believe it wouldn’t take long for her to be intrigued and pulled in by the girl, wanting to poke and prod to see just how bratty, biting, and dangerous misa can get.

misa, for her part, would enjoy the challenge to her viewpoints that L presents, her sarcastic and wry nature, along with the disheveled and intense look L has that misa’s past partners would have lacked. (the last point in particular would draw misa in since she’s always been with shallow, ‘gentlemen-y’ and superficially perfect guys, so L represents this messy sort of energy that misa has always actually been attracted to and wanted to exude in her own way.)

at first, misa would maybe be appalled by L (or at least act as if she is), while secretly envying her unbothered attitude towards most things, and L would be disinterested in misa’s seemingly shallow lifestyle and personality.

it would certainly take some time for the both of them to realize and admit their attraction to each other, but once they did, what follows would be one of the most unlikely and intoxicating situationships of all time.
