A Winter Sun Wakes in the Spring Hill’s Dreams

This series is a quiet perfection. Between queer art house and BL, pretty much blurring the lines. From the director of Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island, this show is as emotional and colorful and beautiful.

I will need to go back and watch this again to properly observe everything over and over again. To me, this is a masterpiece. It’s not a queer utopia. It is a secret reality of queer people in homophobic countries; facing homophobia and hiding in plain sight, yet finding happiness with each other.

This show is very silent, so you do need to observe body language. Music is used sparingly, leaving room for dialogue to be heard loud and clearly. And it lacks the normal awkwardness of Chinese shows with very obvious ADR (automated dialogue replacement), when it is dubbed over weirdly. The dialogue feels like it’s coming from the actors themselves. You can hear the actors and feel the space they are in. Their emotions as they are. Loud or quiet.

It’s not all misery, yet it packs a punch when it is. There’s a lot of happiness in this show. And I’m so glad it’s nearly an hour long for each episode. Of which there are 16.

A Winter Sun Wakes in the Spring Hill’s Dreams: Ep 13

Spoilers obviously.

QT’s death was not a real surprise. At least it wasn’t to me. There were multiple conversations about death in this episode and the episode before it.

QT was having a discussion about his own death with WS. QL was having a conversation with QT about his hypothetical death. There was the village that worshiped the death god in ep 12. There were mentions of bears in the mountains. QT was very clearly not handling his bf’s death well. He was in no place to actually start moving on, as much as he said he would. He had accepted his death for many years, but dealing with it emotionally was incredibly hard for him. I don’t think he really was dealing with his boyfriend’s death at all in a way that would have let him move on. WS was never going to be the love of QT’s life. Not in the way Chen Zhu was.

The fact he’s looking for ghost plants, should have been the nail in the coffin to everyone.

Those mountains are where everyone seems to find peace to be completely themselves. And it is peaceful to know Qingtian has found eternal peace with his lover.

You are just not observant. It’s not rly a plot twist when they’re throwing these very obvious signs at you. Smoking gun in act 1 is to be used in act 3.
