So I made tier list of all the bl (and some gl) I’ve seen.

Masterpiece - all time favorite show or it’s just that good with very little flaws.

Loved it - I will rewatch it and read/write fanfic of it. Recommending. Love it.

Liked it - I didn’t love it but I liked it a lot and would reccomend.

Liked it but needs work - It needs just a little fixing.

It’s ok - I didn’t hate it. And it’s not that amazing. But it’s not garbage. Maybe it’s not my cup of show.

Garbage - Why was this made. It’s just terrible. Why did I finish it?

Guilty Pleasure - It’s either porn or stupidly cute or should be trash and yet I like it anyway.

I got to half an ep and hated it - self explanatory. Slow burn my ass. Read the novel my foot. Bad. If it was good, it would have had a good start.

100 Days Until We Break Up

This show is less a BL and more an introspection on the lives of Japanese queer people and how their lives are as ordinary and complicated as straight people.

To quote Felix of Boyloveinsider, “the series positions itself firmly as a queer drama rather than a conventional BL.”

Given this is a story about two gay men—Kasuga Yuna and Hasegawa Itsuki—who used to be in a relationship, and now have to pretend they’re together for the sake of a documentary on their lives as gay men in Japan.

One views this documentary as not just for them but for a greater purpose. The other wonders when they can stop putting on an act for others and just live for themselves.

The show tackles not only LGBTQ+ rights but also women’s rights in Japan and how they’re also viewed with the same misogynistic lens as other minorities. How they’re seen as lesser to men with the CEO of the production company being used to express bigotry.

Then again, the series is also critical of white savior complex, as the director of the documentary—Kayano Shiho—and her cameraman—Yamada Kentaro—have a brief exchange on treating Hasegawa as a normal person after Yamada makes a joke about Hasegawa being unemployed in real life as well a game the latter played (which he was unbothered by.)

I like this series a lot and I think it’s refreshing to see a queer Japanese series that isn’t wholly depressing.

I was never really a fan of JeffBarcode. I like them both as individuals and have continued to follow both post-KinnPorsche. I watched this because my friend was going to do it, so why not.

It’s not the best but it is very cute and very stupid. I think the CGI was good and honestly it surprised me that the production looked as good as it did. I personally like very dumb and campy shows like Fish Upon the Sky. And this was funny.

Maybe 8/10 is too high, but this is my blog. “My blog. My opinion. My rules.”

Thoughts on Ticket to Heaven so far.

It broken my heart into small pieces the same way Your Name Engraved Herein did. It’s only two episodes so far and my heart fucking sank at the first one.

How do you even tell a child that “if you’re good, you get to see [your dead parents].” My fucking heart breaks for this show. I can already see the journey and struggle Tanrak is going through as his life is influenced by Barth. And I can already see this boy’s mind combating with his budding sexuality vs his religious beliefs. And it just pains me to see that he’s going to hate himself. He’s going to think something is wrong with him and that he will never see his parents again. That’s what kills me.

I love GemFourth’s acting. I know they’re brilliant with comedy but they deserve all the flowers for their more serious roles. Moonlight Chicken made me fall in love with GemFourth.

I think bls like Double Helix have a right to exist. I think that viewer understanding of it needs to be not victim blaming and rape apology.

The amount I have seen over the past few weeks is horrifying to me. I can’t imagine people having the same response (but they would) to something like Banana Fish, where every homosexual sex scene is a violent assault. Ash was repeatedly raped as a child and throughout his teens. He was trafficked.

I really don’t care that Double Helix is cnc, bc I’ve seen the same response to this from Addicted Heroine. And I avoid that for the same reason of extremely explicit rape. Like the author goes out of their way to call it rape. And get people still like it.

I have this belief that love cannot exist after you’ve internally and violently assaulted your partner. Especially SA. That’s not love bc you would never do that if you did love them.

If you want messy but not SA, then there are other options.

Only friends; only friends: Dream on; dark blue and moonlight.

And rape can be shown as bad in a show. And it also doesn’t have to be between the leads. Like Happy of the End, Pitbabe, Secret Relationships, the Love Never Sets.

I’ll stop posting about this for now.

BL RATING: Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars

Rating: I Loved It

This show is a monkey’s paw about self-love, not taking things for granted, and the fear of being forgotten. Honestly, Taiwan makes some of the most raw emotional shows, given its history of queer media. Not all of it is great, but this one is.

He Xiangyong returns to his hometown after being laid off as a book editor. He wishes to not be recognized by anyone, already feeling no one cares about him and nothing would change if he disappeared. His father runs a small resort on the island, and it’s there Xiangyong runs into his high school crush, Chen Hao Wei.

Does it drag a little? Yes, but it’s still captivating because you can relate to XY’s feelings of invisibility even when you’re right there.

The B plot between Li Wan Zhe and Hama-Chan was very cute and funny. (WZ wishes to have a whirlwind romance and as monkey’s paws tend to be, it was a guy.) It really gut punched me during episode 9, after XY and WZ returned to 2 months ago, after they made their wishes, and Hama wasn’t pursuing WZ and he was really thrown off. The show gets more unnerving this way as you’re forced to experience the panic attack XY is going through with no breaks.

I think my initial thoughts about the show were “it’s an okay show.” But then episode 9 aired and this thing is amazing. The twist is spectacular. It does make you think of all the little things in life that happened because of you. Or didn’t happen because of you. XY finally loves himself and appreciates his impact on those around him.

Episode 10 just makes it better. You can feel XY’s anxiety and desperation, but also can sympathize with WZ not wanting to reverse his wish. (CHW supposedly drowning is also the cherry on top.)

The last time I had this much anxiety and sadness about a Taiwanese show was 2019’s History 3: Make Our Days Count. It is a horrifying experience to watch yourself being erased from existence. So now it’s a matter of time to reverse the wish or be erased forever.

Holy fucking shit. What the fucking hell?! I’m so like????? I’m on my fucking lunch break and instead of reading cute fanfics, I’m having a fucking argument about sexual assault and how it’s not love. It’s never love. Love died the moment Lu Feng decided to be a violence asshole.

No. Nope. I can’t. I really can’t with people who like Lu Feng from Double Helix. Cause why are you all gathering around him like he’s a misunderstood puppy who just bit someone because he didn’t know better?

The amount of victim blaming against Yi Chen and rape apology I have seen for Lu Feng is vile and disgusting. I saw someone post that the novel allegedly states Yi Chen likes being raped, as if that justifies or makes anything better. NO! LU FENG KIDNAPPED AND RAPED YI CHEN!

I fucking can’t wait for the helicopter to kill him again.

Some of you people have never watched The Effect and it shows. Cause you would never be acting like this if you did.

Edit: I went on Instagram and the amount of people claiming Lu Feng still “deeply loves” Yi Chen is insane. He raped Yi Chen. Rape is not love. I am just so disturbed right now. This is gross and disgusting. Everyone wants male SA until it’s actually shown. And then it’s “okay bc they’re both men.” And not only men, but gay men who used to be in a relationship with each other. Hell fucking no.

Oh my fucking god, these people piss me off. They’re so fucking disgusting to be around. I don’t give a shit if they’re not real. Lu Feng raped Yi Chen. End of discussion.

BL REVIEWS: 2Moons2

Rating: Loved it

This show isn’t actually that great. They’re mostly just really pretty. And unfortunately the behind scenes is incredibly sad. But this show is like…okay. For its time it was great. I love it bc it’s been this long and it holds a fond place in my heart.

2moons2 is a remake of 2moons (which aired in 2017.) 2moons2 aired in 2018. It follows 3 couples: PhanaWayo, MingKit, and ForthBeam. Phana, Beam, and Kit are doctors. Blah blah blah.

If they were to redo all of it now, I think it’d come out the same. They didn’t really go hard on Wayo being a femme bottom. The most they did was give him a gayer comedic support with names I don’t remember, and a pink room.

If you’re looking for a nothing burger romcom with dated SA into a relationship + unfinished potential then watch 2moons2.

(Mingkit was my favorite couple.)

Black Flags in BL

I am so tired of seeing “Lu Feng this” and “Lu Feng that” all over my feed. No. This man is awful. I don’t care how awful his life is or has been. I don’t care that he has a tragic backstory. I don’t care how unfair life is. I don’t care even if Xiao Chen was being a bitch (which he wasn’t. He was scared of his homophobic mother after seeing how Cheng Yi Chen was treated.)

You don’t push someone down the stairs. I don’t get why you people are cheering on that Xiao Chen is disabled. “My boyfriend broke up with me because of familial and societal pressure and he’s a coward. Let me violently push his brother down the stairs.”

I have rly only seen both Round Trip to Love movies, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an understanding of who Lu Feng is. He is a violent man who uses violence to get what he wants. He does not love Yi Chen because he would let it go and stop. Your boyfriend is a coward and unfortunately he’s not brave enough for you. So what?! You don’t violently attack people. That’s not justified. That’s never justified.

It’s like saying Lhong from TharnType was justified in:

Organizing the gang rape of a minor

Blackmailing

Attempted murder

All because he was lonely, his family didn’t pay attention to him, and Tharn never returned his romantic feelings. NO! YOU PEOPLE ARE INSANE!

You need to wake tf up. Lu Feng is a violent asshole who does violent shit. I don’t pity any of you when you watch the next episode, if you’re cheering on this violent monster. Life is unfair and you move on. You don’t violently attack people.

I’m rewatching Pit Babe and I’m realizing:

There are like no cops ever.

It’s really easy to enter, leave, and collect direct evidence of Tony’s human trafficking/experimentation.

Most of the show is shot on handheld cameras instead of dollies. The shots where it’s stable is most definitely shot on a drone since they’re high up and slow moving most of the time.

The music is awful. Let me remake it. I have a Spotify playlist I need to update. Let me fix the intro. Idc how iconically bad it is. Let the opening track be Kesha.

Ticket to Heaven vs Your Name Engraved Herein

I watched YNEH like 50 times for an essay in college, so I know the film pretty well. Ticket to Heaven is coming out soon, and while I have not read the novel, I’d like to at least make some comparisons between the trailer and the film. I know it’s only the trailer, but still.

It’s gmmtv and I don’t have a ton of hope for it. Ticket to Heaven is 5 episodes with 45 minutes per episode. YNEH is an 1 hour and 54 minute long film. Ticket to Heaven has 3-4 hours in comparison to do a whole thing about Catholic guilt and being gay.

The trailer is a bit too bright to me and very similar to YNEH for its overall basic plot. I hope gmmtv doesn’t mess it up and give us boring rom com with sprinkles of Catholic guilt. Especially today, when you live in a Christian nation and are beaten over the head with the type of horror people use religion to justify hate with, you have high expectations. I am not religious but I grew up Lutheran, so I know what the church is like. I never really had to face homophobia in my life, but I do know how bad it can get.

That being said, YNEH is not solely about Catholic guilt. It is also very much a period piece about Taiwan after martial law was lifted in 1987. So it’s not only religious pressure but overall societal pressure.

I don’t know. It seems just a little predictable. I just hope GemFourth’s performance is going to encapsulate me like they did in Moonlight Chicken.

Fixing TharnType s1.

This series holds a weird place in my heart. It is trash and there is a multitude of extremely problematic shit everywhere in this damn universe, but it can be fixed. It’s not that hard either.

Tharn doesn’t assault Type at all. And there is no assault in the shower.

Instead, Tharn just pins Type to a wall. Type pushes Tharn on the first incident bc Tharn isn’t really trying to hold him. The second, Type struggles more to get out bc now Tharn is trying. Type is going through one of the worst panic attacks he’s had in a while and breaks down. That’s when Tharn lets go.

I don’t think Type would tell Tharn at first. I think he would be very angry after the breakdown. But after calming down, he could tell Tharn.

There is no fwb. Idc. This is now enemies to friends to lovers. It’s more realistic and less assaulty to me.

I have no idea how to fix Tar getting assaulted other than Lhong going to prison at the end of the show.

I still want Type and Tar to have a friend’s relationship. Like most of this is going to be the same except less assault and more consequences.
