Fenis Castle in Aosta Valley, Italy was built in the medieval times - around the 12-13th century. Since the Middle Ages until the 18th century the castle belonged to the Challant family. when it was sold it lost its prestigious status of the family seat. Just imagine the ground floor was turned into stables and a barn! The castle is famous for its towers - big and small, round and square-, walls and intricate pentagonal layout. And here I thought I had a big fireplace….

The one shown above is on the piano nobile where the family lived and was used for cooking. The one below is on the ground floor and is simply enormous.

An entire cow could be roasted on the left side where the flagstones are. The hood is among the largest in Europe at nearly 18 meters high. This fireplace was used to heat the entire castle as well as to smoke meat for preservation. There is also a door inside it. Fenis castle dates to 1242.

Fenis Castle

Fenis Castle is located in the town of Fenis, Italy. The medieval castle was built on a small knoll in the Aosta Valley in the 14th century. Although designed as a defensive structure with towers and battlement walls, the prestigious residence was built for the Challant family. Many towers were added to the existing turret in the 14th century or early 15th century. In 1716, the castle was sold to Count Baldassarre Castellar of Saluzzo Paesena. The pentagonal-designed castle went through a decline in function and was turned into a rural dwelling with the ground floor serving as stables. In 1895, it was purchased by Alfredo d’Andrade, who began to restore the structure. Today, the castle is owned by the Regional Council and serves as a museum. The castle has a fully painted inner courtyard with a semi-round staircase where the fresco of Saint George killing the dragon is painted. A walkway links the watchtowers. The interior boasts a weapons room, a refectory for soldiers and servants, a chapel, representation rooms, kitchens, wooden balconies, frescoes, paintings, cartouches with proverbs and moral quotes, and more.
