Prompt 20: Blending In

Jas had been in Gridania for three days. The first full day she had spent entirely in the tiny room she had rented, worrying. She was a stranger in a strange place, completely on her own for the first time in her life, and Gridanians had a reputation for being not much more friendly than Ishgardians. On the second day, she had finally worked up the courage to approach the archer’s guild and, to her relief, had been accepted. There had been unfriendly looks, but none of them had come from the guild master, a calm elezen woman whose steady presence managed to calm even Jas’s nerves, at least a little. The guild had also offered her a place to stay, even smaller than the room she had rented. As she had very little gil to her name, she had taken it.

Even at the guild, Jas kept to herself, following orders and speaking only when necessary. Her training over for the day, she found she couldn’t face the thought of the stifling room just yet. Instead, she ventured out into the city, looking for some quiet corner where she could sit and pull her cloak of invisibility around herself. The cloak was no physical garment, no magic. She had learned years ago that if she put herself into a certain state of mind, the eyes of others tended to slide off of her, never really noticing that she was there. A survival skill at Whitebrim Front, and she had mastered it. It was hardly foolproof, but at times it had even worked on people who had been specifically looking for her. She just… became part of the background.

She found what she was looking for in the Acorn Orchard, behind the Carpenter’s guild. A patch of grass next to the trunk of a tree, well out of anyone’s way. She sat, pulled the mental cloak around herself. It was a sort of meditation, her head nearly clear of thoughts, as if she barely even existed. And as she watched a few people pass by, it was clear that to them, she didn’t exist. Seen, but unseen.

And then… someone did see her. A lalafellen… man? he had a bit of scruff that was probably a beard, so it must be a man… looked right at her. From his robes, he seemed to be a conjurer. He tilted his head to one side, considering, then approached. Jas had seen very few lalafells before leaving Coerthas, and none up close. She had yet to truly get used to them. They were so … so strange looking. And so tiny! Sitting down, her eyes were nearly on a level with his while he stood. His eyes were strange as well… a deep purple, but seemingly lacking a pupil. Had the other lalafells she’d seen here had pupils? She thought they did…

“Are you alright?” She blinked in surprise at his voice, not even registering the question at first. It wasn’t deep exactly, but it was far deeper than she had expected. A grown man’s voice, not child-like at all.

“Ah… sorry?” she stammered, finally realizing that she had been asked a question.

“You seem rather lonely, is all,” the lalafell continued.

“‘M fine,” she muttered, hunching in on herself a bit.

“I did not mean to intrude,” he said, backing off a bit. He didn’t leave though, only taking a few steps back before sitting on the grass facing her.

“S’alright,” she said, though perhaps too quietly for him to hear. She wasn’t really sure if it was alright, but it seemed like the thing to say. It certainly wouldn’t do to antagonize a conjurer.

He tilted his head to one side again. “Am I right in thinking you aren’t forestborn?” he asked. It didn’t seem to be an accusation in his mouth though.

“... Aye,” she admitted. He must have heard her accent even in the few words she had spoken. His friendly demeanor didn’t go away, however.

“Been here long?”

“Only a few days.” He brightened at that, which she certainly had not expected.

“I’ve been here a little over a week, myself,” he said. “Not the friendliest place, is it? Are you sure you wouldn’t like some company? I know I could use someone to talk to.”

Jas couldn’t help but smile a bit at that. There was something about him that put her at ease.

“... Alright.”

“What’s your name?”

“Jas… well, Jasdralinda. Dunno why my mum gave me somethin’ so fancy.” She’d never liked her name. Part of her had always suspected that her mother had come up with the flowery name in the hopes of covering the stench of bastardy. If she had, it hadn’t worked. The lalafell beamed at her.

“I’m Chechenji, but most people call me Chazz.” Jas wasn’t sure how exactly one got “Chazz” from “Chechenji,” and the confusion must have shown on her face because he laughed and explained. “I have three brothers, and their names all start with ‘Cheche.’ I’m not exactly sure where ‘Chazz’ came from, but it probably caught on because the second half of my name is awkward to pronounce on its own.”

Jas smiled, held out a hand. “Pleased t’meet you, Chazz.” He got up and shook her hand, and she was struck by how tiny his hand was, struck again by how tiny he was. Lalafells would certainly take more getting used to.

“Pleased to meet you, Jas,” he answered. And Jas thought that perhaps for the first time, just maybe, she had made a friend.

Prompt 15: Doppelganger

It was near two weeks ago now that Otah’li had hired the young elezen woman, and Jarexx was feeling fairly sure that she was exactly what she appeared to be. Certain enough, at least, to risk some cautious questioning around the one issue that his mind simply couldn’t drop.

“So, that other lalafell that you know…” He tried to sound as casual as possible as he brought it up. Just idle conversation and slight curiosity, nothing more. Absolutely not something that was life or death. “The one you mistook me for at first. Just how much like me does he look?”

“Hrm? Oh, not so much, now that I’m more used ta you.” Jas answered. Good start. The girl was Ishgardian, not used to lalafell. Might just be a case of all lalafell looking the same to her. “It’s th’ hair color mostly. His is a bit darker though. An’ his skintone’s about th’ same, I think.” … getting more worrisome, but could still be complete coincidence.  “His ears’re a bit smaller, an’ they droop down a bit at the tips. Oh, an’ his eyes are different.”

Please, Jarexx thought. Please tell me he’s plainsfolk. I can stop worrying if he’s plainsfolk.

“His eyes’re purple, ‘stead’a yellow.” Jarexx tried to keep the panic from his face as he felt his heart rate shoot up. Of course his eyes were purple. Coincidence, he tried to tell himself. It could still be coincidence. Are you going to bet your life on that? his mind whispered back. No. No he wasn’t.

“Any earrings?” An odd question, for all that he tried to make it sound casual. And a very dangerous one, if she wasn’t as clueless as she seemed. Fortunately, she didn’t seem to notice.

“Nah. Don’t think his ears are pierced.”

Jarexx gave an internal sigh of relief at that, and tried to relax. No earrings. That meant it had to be coincidence. Of course it is, he told himself. Why would some lowborn Ishgardian who’s never traveled past the Shroud know an Ul’dahn drug lord? The very idea was ridiculous. Still, he doubted he’d be able to completely silence the paranoid voice in his head until he’d met the man for himself.

Prompt 12: Caste

There were many things Jas was trying to escape when she left Coerthas. But most of all? She felt like she was trying to escape herself. Lowborn. Bastard. She’d never escape such labels in Ishgard, nor the abuse that came from them. In Gridania, no one cared that she was lowborn. No one knew that she was a bastard. She was just another elezen, and one that looked like a Wildwood, at that. Of course, that illusion was shattered the moment she opened her mouth. She had seen more than a few expressions sour at her accent. But they were judging her for being foreign. An Outsider. She could deal with that. She could deal with isolation. The archer’s guild accepted foreigners, even if the people didn’t. And the elementals had granted her leave to stay. Nothing else mattered. She wouldn’t let anything else matter.

Prompt 10: Slap

Chazz was never quite sure what prompted him to look into the bush. Some tiny sound, maybe. Or his conjury training making him more sensitive to signals from the bush itself. Or perhaps it was just that, as close to the ground as he already was, he saw something out of the corner of his eye that did not belong. Whatever it was, he paused to look, bending over slightly and gently pulling aside a branch. He was quite surprised to find, huddled within and fairly well concealed from the path, his friend Jas (who, if he was being honest with himself, he was developing a rather major crush on). The young elezen woman was huddled in on herself, arms wrapped around her knees and head buried in her arms. Was she crying?

“Jas? Are you alright?” The lalafell got down on his hands and knees and crawled partway into the bush. Subtle conjury encouraged twigs to move slightly out of the way to grant him easier passage. “What happened?”

“Someone slapped my arse.” She didn’t raise her head, and her voice came out fairly muffled. She sounded mortified, but he didn’t think she was crying. “I’m never comin’ outta this bush.”

A wave of cold anger washed over him and his eyes narrowed. “Who?” he demanded.

“Dunno. Some elezen. Never seen him before. Never want to see him again.”

“What did he look like?”

“Didn’t get a good look at him.”

Chazz took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and fought down the unfamiliar anger. As satisfying as it would be to punish the man, interrogating Jas wasn’t helping the situation. Besides… what would he even do if he had that information? He let the breath out in a slow sigh and opened his eyes again.

“Sorry,” he said, genuinely contrite. “Can I at least join you in the bush?” She nodded, or at least he thought she did. It was a little hard to tell.

“If you want to.” The tone of her voice made his heart ache. He crawled all the way in, found a spot to sit next to her. Should he put a hand on her arm? Instead, he scooted a bit closer to her side and wrapped his arms around his own knees. Watched feet go by out on the path. He heard a slight sniffle.

“Well, if you’re never coming out, you seem to have picked a nice spot to live in,” he said, hoping to lighten the mood a bit. He was rewarded with a small laugh. The thrill emboldened him and, greatly daring, he leaned against her, resting his head against her side. She made no objection. He thought she might even have leaned back against him slightly. He closed his eyes, savoring the contact, and let his mind drift into the things he’d like to do to the man who had so insulted and upset her. Rocks featured rather prominently in these imaginings.

They sat there for some time. Long enough for the light to begin to shift, shadows lengthening into evening. Quietly, so quietly that he almost didn’t hear it, Jas muttered, “Thank you.” Chazz smiled.

“Any time.”
