23: what’s the nicest review you’ve ever gotten?
This one’s easy. I actually got it as a private message on fanfic.net a few years ago instead of a public review, and it was 7 paragraphs so I won’t type the whole thing, but it made me cry happy tears.I used to write Naruto and Final Fantasy VII reader-inserts on Quizilla back in 2008ish, and I got a message years later from someone who used to love those stories, and found me again on FF.net. She told me all about how she used to read my stories back in the day, and still reads them to this day because, even as an adult, they’re comforting and cheer her up.The whole reason I write is to brighten people’s days with my writing, or at least distract from an otherwise crappy day. So to hear that I’d actually achieved that, and that stories I wrote 10 years ago still had the power to make people feel better, got me absolutely sobbing.
Until I got that review, I’d been in a writing rut. But the reviewer got my motivation up, and that’s when I migrated to AO3 and started writing for BNHA!
24: what’s the meanest review you’ve ever gotten? Do you think the reviewer intended it?
I’ve actually been really lucky with reviewers over the years, in that I’ve never actually gotten flames. I’ve had constructive criticisms but nothing I’d call mean.
That being said, the first ever critique I got, back in 2011, I didn’t take well. It was on my 200k Naruto fic Rock Angel over on fanfic.net, and basically said that one of my characters was too childish and jarring to the plot.
There was a bit of confusion over how old she was, because of how the UK and USA school systems work and what everything is called, but yeah it was my first ever real fanfiction and I saw Amaya – she’s called Amaya – as one of my babies. I didn’t take too kindly to someone calling her attitude out. Looking back it was a fair critique though, if not worded a little harshly. I know the reviewer was only trying to help, although the phrase “try not to use this kind of character” felt a bit much.
All that being said, I went back over Rock Angel and tried to tone down Amaya’s eccentricity, but not enough to change her completely.~~~~~~~~
