Desperate Measures // Self Para
Groaning in frustration, Sophie placed her head in her hands, resting her elbows on the table. Managing the hat shop from so far away was turning out to be a great deal more difficult that she had initially figured, and doing so was staring to keep her up all night. Every night. It certainly didn’t help that business was slower than ever, the only person willing to work for the shop being Lettie. To be perfectly blunt, Hatters Hat Shop was plummeting rather quickly into bankruptcy.
The constant noise that floated about the halls of Hogwarts combined with her unnatural stress levels had been enough to drive her up a wall, so she had taken her briefcase and left the common room. Taking up a spot in the library, she had opted to continue with bookkeeping there instead, where she could sip tea in a significantly quieter environment.
She was a little calmer now, but her frustrations had yet to vanish by any means. No matter how long she sat there in thought, she couldn’t figure a solution to keep the family business alive.
Sighing, she ran her hands through her hair, coming to rest them on her shoulders. “Breathe,” she reminded herself softly, a note of bitterness in her voice. She would find a way to get through this. With the right amount of determination and a well thought out plan, the hat shop could still be saved. Of that she was still hopeful.
So with a little more optimism than before, she collected her papers and stood, tucking them neatly back into the briefcase. After smoothing down her skirt and tucking back her hair, she pushed in her chair and started on her way out of the library. She made her way down the isle, and caught sight of a book lying out in the open. Stopping in her tracks, Sophie looked around for whoever might have left the book, but found no one. Shrugging, she picked it up, looking for a title so that she might be able to put it back in its place on the shelf.
“Oh,” she mumbled in surprise, her eyes widening. It wasn’t a book that she had seen before, but it was certainly one that she had heard of. It belonged in the restricted section of the library, and for good reason, she supposed. How it had ended up there, she didn’t have the faintest idea. Glancing over her shoulder again to make sure that she was alone, she flipped through its pages, her eyes scanning the contents. The book spoke of various dark spells and potions that were very rarely spoke of; most of which she had never heard of. Curses and hexes that could quite easily end another’s life, or unnatural potions that could very well send someone straight to Azkaban.
Trying her best to ignore the chills that ran down her spine, she turned the page again, only to freeze entirely. There, staring her directly in the face, was a potion to bring about great fortune.
Perhaps it was a crazy idea- one that might land her in far more trouble than she would like, but it was an idea. In fact, it was her only idea. And it just might work.
So with quick and decisive motions, she tore out the page and set the book back down, before folding the paper and sticking it in her pocket. Drawing a deep breath and reminding herself to keep a cool head, she headed out of the library, at war with her conscience.
