Educação Sentimental (Júlio Bressane, 2013)
Where Are All The Mermen? A Brief Study.
There is a reason why we see mermaids depicted in art or literature much more often than mermen. The fact is that mermen are typically stay-at-home dads and are much too busy teaching and caring for their children to be bothered hunting, exploring, or any other activities that require coming up toward the surface. It is exceeding rare for mermen to become geognosy biologist, which is the most common profession among the mermaids that are spotted by humans.
Merpeople mate in a manner similar to seahorses. The males have a special pouch on the ventral, or front-facing, side of the tail that the female deposits her egg into. He fertilizes the egg and then takes care of the baby from there. Unlike seahorses, child rearing doesn’t stop at birth for mermen. Merpeople are more like humans in this regard, as they care for their children until they are fully grown. Most merchildren are home schooled, taught by the very fathers who carried them as babies. While mermaids who don’t mate typically occupy their time with work or studies and show little interest in babies or children, unmated mermen often find a yearning to tend to children, even if they don’t particularly want any of their own. It is not at all uncommon for childless males to assist other mermen who have multiple children or no mate to help raise their child/children.
As more and more mermen began assisting others in raising their children rather than have their own, it quickly became common to see two mermen raising children together. It also became completely acceptable for females with no intention of spreading their eggs to travel together and form strong bonds. Perhaps this is the reason same sex couples were never considered taboo among merpeople. It simply makes sense to them that two mermen would want to stay home and nurture children together while two mermaids would want to hunt or explore together.
The concept of mermaids who are attracted to human males and wish to join them on land is purely a human fantasy. As is the notion of mermaids using their ‘feminine whiles’ to lure human men to their deaths. Mermaids are actually fierce and efficient hunters who favor spears and lances. They generally direct their efforts towards large marine game, such as sharks or other large fish.
On occasion, a mermaid will travel onto land in her quest for knowledge of land dwelling flora and fauna. These mermaids sometimes return with horror stories of humans. They tell of how the females incubate the babies inside them. Not in a pouch, like mermen, but literally in an organ inside their bodies. They speak of how males are expected to be ‘tougher’ than females, which somehow translates to withholding the expression of certain emotions, even among their loved ones. They speak of weapons used by humans against other humans that are considered different due to regional occupation or external markers like eye shape or skin tone.
They find all of this very strange and horrifying. For this reason, they generally avoid contact with humans. They certainly do not allow merchildren anywhere near human habitats, which, again, is why we so rarely see signs of the mermen who raise them.
