By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary Alice, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity"

I need a folklorist to tie Copperhead Road into the tradition of highwayman ballads, romanticizing crime as a protest against corrupt governments and a means of self-determination for the oppressed lower classes

By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany BayRiverdale
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
It's the sort of day where all the old folksongs make me cry
one of my favorite songs of all time... one night my little sister asked for a story so i made one up about the daughter in the song leaving athenry and sailing around the world to australia to find her father and i swear it was the highlight of my creative career XD
