(there are 7 more special luxury editions of @ariaste's new book The Wisdom of Emperors currently available on Kickstarter!)
Part 1: Design Research
It's Wi(p)sdom Wednesday! The day I update y'all on how bookbinding for The Wisdom of Emperor's is going! (I've decided. It's official. I'm doing it.)
First and most importantly, I finished reading the book. It! is! so! good! I laughed! I cried! I learned things! I cried some more! My mind was buzzing! My heart was full! My face was wet!
I spent the rest of my flight (after crying into my t-shirt) rereading bits, highlighting things, and sketching.
The way I like to make my designs is by reading (and/or rereading,) making notes of important objects, and then deciding on an overarching motif that will allow me to incorporate all those objects in a natural way. (A good example of this is Yield Under Great Persuasion, where a marrow vine tied together all the objects/imagery from the book I wanted to incorporate.) But for other projects, there's been only one or two specific objects, places, themes, or ideas that I ended up using as my main design. Depends on the book! Depends on the vibe!
Before finishing the book, I went to The Met to do some research on Hadrianic Era Roman art.
Putting photos & the rest of this post below the cut!
a little bit of my Carry On rebind 🌈💖
