My Little Pony: FIENDship is Magic Part 2: Tirek Summary

Note this is a summary of what happened in the comic the only parts I will be going over are the important parts. I am doing this because these comics are hard to find and I wish to spread it to all MLP fans. And yes, this is official and Canon. I know season 4 touched on a little bit of Tirek's backstory but here is the rest of his backstory.

The comic begins in Lord Tirek's desolate homeland a long time ago. A young Tirek and his Gargoyle brother Scorpan travel outside their castle home to the Nether Lands, despite their father warning them against it.

Inside a cave, Tirek finds a Centaur hermit named Sendak the Elder. After Tirek commands Scorpan to stand watch outside, Sendak shows that he has returned from a journey to Equestria and has abducted a Unicorn Stallion (that doesn't have a name unfortunately, all I can tell you about this Unicorn is its black, with a purple mane like Luna, except the difference is Cutie Mark looks like Saturn with a few stars surrounding it), intending to absorb its magic and become all-powerful. Sendak senses a desire for power in Tirek as well but tells him he is too young and undisciplined. The castle bells suddenly ring, and Tirek returns home with Scorpan.

In the castle throne room, the Centaur King Vorak and Gargoyle Queen Haydon (Tirek and Scorpan's father and mother) discuss Tirek's increasingly rebellious nature and recurrent visits to see Sendak. They worry that his thirst for power is a negative influence on the good-natured Scorpan, and Vorak worries that Tirek will one day use his magical gifts against him.

That night, Tirek sneaks out to visit Sendak again in his cave. After using magic to restrain Sendak while he sleeps, Tirek tries to absorb the captured Unicorn's magic. The magic absorbing spell goes horribly wrong, causing an explosion that traps Sendak under a pile of rubble. Sendak reaches out to Tirek for help, but Tirek abandons him and sneaks back to the castle.

By the next morning, King Vorak and his guards have rescued Sendak and the Unicorn from the destroyed cave. He arranges for Sendak to work in the mines forever for his crimes and prepares a delegation to escort the Unicorn back to Equestria with apologies to Princess Celestia (Knowing her though she's very understanding). When asked about his whereabouts the night before, Tirek claims he never left the castle, but King Vorak doesn't believe him. He confines Tirek to his chambers until he returns from Equestria.

From his balcony, Tirek plans to one day overthrow his father and finish what Sendak could not: rule over Equestria.

And that is the rest of the backstory behind Lord Tirek.

For my 150th Revisit. I’m going back to a review I did for a theme month.

We begin in the present where Twilight is teaching Cadance Dark Magic. Its moments like these that make me think Specific Magics are more like keys than actual strength stuff. Like this magic only seems used to open specific stuff locked behind it. But regardless Cadance wants to learn because she thinks Sombra is hiding something. And she was right. They find his personal office and a journal talking about himself.

In his journal, he talks about his beginnings. Being found outside the Crystal Empire with only the ability to talk like a Pokemon to taken to an orphanage where he quickly learned to talk. Sadly most of the kids don’t like him because he seems weird to them. Only Radiant Hope hangs out with him since she’s weird too (for having an imagination).

One thing I do give credit for with IDW’s take on Sombra is that they do build on the friendship between the two. They were so close until a look into the Crystal Heart scared him and even years later Radiant Hope still has hope Sombra can turn good after the whole “enslaving the Crystal Empire” thing.

How good of friends are they? For months they’ve been saving up to go see the Crystal Fair, but when Sombra began to get sick she never left his side. Even year after year of him getting sick on this specific day Hope never left his side. So when he was seemingly getting destroyed, Radiant Hope saved him and earned her cutie mark.

Her Special Talent was so Super Special Awesome, she got invited to join Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. Sombra saw this as the vision coming true and ran off, where he finds out he was sent here by the Umbrum to free them. In fact, it was because of them unlocking his powers years ago was what made him became sick. Seeing no escape from his vision, he learns from them and goes on to get the Crystal Heart.

Just as he puts it in a sack, Princess Amore shows up. She knew this was going to happen because she thinks Sombra can overcome it. She knew since he was found. She knew since that vision he saw. She knew since he was getting sick during the Crystal Fair. And she did NOTHING TO HELP! NOT A DANG NABBIT THING!!! Oh hey Sombra, I knew you were teased as a kid, suffered during the Crystal Fair and had fears of losing Radiant Hope and becoming a monster, but I believe you can see all the good we did like... Well... Uh... So Radiant Hope huh?

She is a terrible leader. Hides emergency weapons under a test. Does nothing to help a lost soul. Tells no one else about this. At least Sombra shows initiative when enslaving the Crystal Ponies and stoning Amore. He even shatters her in front of Radiant Hope (they can honestly fix her) and plans to curse the Crystal Empire with a disappearance to spite her. With Cadance saying the Crystal Empire is boring sometimes and Amore’s incompetence, I think its safe to say Sombra was the most effective leader.

It ends with them leaving, Twilight feeling sorry for Sombra, Cadance reminding her that he’s still an evil pony, and a tease for his return. Honestly my thoughts from before are the same now: trying to make Sombra sympathetic made the Crystal Empire seem much worse than what the show provides. But since my last review, there has been one major change...

The show gave us Sombra’s Official Return. One where he’s not a sympathetic villain where we hope to see him succeed. He’s a goofy villain who wants to take over Equestria because he wants to. And honestly he is a lot more fun like this. But since I committed to using IDW’s interpretation of Sombra, he’s stuck with that past.

The MLP comics are so hecking hard core. It’s just like

Tirek’s mentor kidnapped a Unicorn, drugged him, put him in a cage, and experiments on him. 

That just... happens

If you ever wished MLP got just a smidge darker I would defiantly recommend reading the comics.
