Women Wore ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Robes To The Texas Senate Floor

On Monday, a  group of activists wore red robes to the Texas Senate floor, as an homage to the characters from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

They were protesting two pieces of anti-choice legislation: 

- Senate Bill 415, a regulation that would effectively ban a safe and common procedure used for second trimester abortions, which anti-choice legislators have taken to calling a “dismemberment abortion ban.”

- SB 25 ― a bill that would effectively allow doctors to lie to pregnant women if they detect a fetal anomaly and are concerned their patients might opt for abortion.

The New Texas Abortion Law Is Actually Increasing The Cost Of The Procedure In A Disturbing Way

Lawmakers in Texas have taken a twisted new step forward in their efforts to curb abortion access following the Supreme Court's shutdown of its TRAP laws. Regulations requiring the burial or cremation of aborted or miscarried fetal remains will go into effect Dec. 19, state officials told The Texas Tribune earlier this week. Under new rules proposed in July and recently passed by the state's Health and Human Services Commission, hospitals, abortion clinics, and healthcare providers may no longer dispose of fetal remains in sanitary landfills, but must instead bury or cremate them, regardless of the gestation period.

Yet again, Texas lawmakers are imposing unnecessary barriers on women’s personal decision-making. These new restrictions will push safe & affordable abortion care out of reach for those struggling to make ends meet. h/t @bustle
