Waiting for DVDs to convert to AVI as backups is a pain in the backside no matter what program I’m using to get it done, but well worth it for folks like me who like to collect physical media but want to preserve it and avoid damaging discs or cases. Not to mention running DVDs on a laptop means accessing menus is a tedious affair that I really don’t enjoy doing. Patience, as they say, is a virtue.
It turns out that ripping from AAX and converting from M4B to MP3 is much less time consuming despite there being a lot more typing involved.
I got a lot done today (and will be getting others done in the near future) and I’ll have them nestled safely in my Dropbox so that they don’t take up too much space on my laptop.

why won't my iphone photos open on my pc (and how to fix it free)
so you airdropped/emailed/USB'd some photos off your iphone and now your computer just... won't open them. this happens to literally everyone at some point and it's because of a format called HEIC. here's the free fix.
okay but what even is HEIC
it's the format your iphone has been saving photos in by default since iOS 11. the upside: files are like half the size of an equivalent JPG. the downside: basically nothing outside the apple ecosystem knows what to do with it.
windows just... won't preview it
some apps and messengers reject HEIC uploads or mangle the quality converting it themselves
you email/drive-share it to someone and they can't open it, cue the "can you resend as jpg" text
ImageStream's HEIC Converter fixes all of this in your browser, no download required.
upload your HEIC files — drag em in, up to 20 at a time
pick your output format. JPG has a quality slider if you want to fine-tune the size/quality tradeoff, PNG is lossless
download — one at a time or all together as a zip
when this actually saves you
windows users who just want the file to open. convert to jpg/png first, skip the whole "why won't this open" spiral entirely.
posting to social media / messaging apps. some silently wreck the quality converting HEIC themselves, or just reject it. converting yourself first = you control the quality.
sending stuff for work. nothing like a HEIC attachment nobody on the other end can open. convert before you send, save everyone the round trip.
quick FAQ
what's a HEIC file, actually? apple's compressed photo format since iOS 11 — about half the size of a same-quality JPG, but compatibility outside apple devices is spotty.
does converting lose quality? converting to jpg can lose a little, but cranking the quality slider up keeps it close to the original. png conversion is lossless.
can I do a bunch at once? yep, up to 20 files, and you get them all back as one zip.
what about live photos / depth data? only the still frame converts — the video part of a live photo doesn't carry over, and depth map metadata gets stripped too.
can I just stop my phone from saving as HEIC? settings > camera > formats > "most compatible" switches it to jpg going forward. files get bigger though, so a lot of people just keep HEIC and convert when they need to.
there's a bunch of other free browser-based image tools over at ImageStream if you're into that — compression, background removal, all no-signup.
need to convert other image formats too? the format converter tool's got you.
