#DailyDevotion The LORD Looks At The Heart When He Chooses David 1 Samuel 16:5-13 He purified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they came, he saw Eliab and thought, “Certainly here before the LORD is the one He wants to anoint.” 7“Don't look at his appearance,” the LORD told Samuel, “or how tall he is, because I have rejected him. God does not see as man sees, because a man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks into the heart...” 10So Jesse had seven of his sons come before Samuel, but Samuel told Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these. 11Are these all the sons you have?" Samuel asked Jesse. "There's still the youngest one,” he answered. "He's watching the sheep." "Send someone to get him," Samuel told Jesse. “We won't sit down till he gets here." 12He sent someone who brought him. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes, and handsome. “Go ahead,” the LORD said, “and anoint him. This is the one.” 13Samuel took the horn of olive oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the LORD's Spirit came mightily upon David and stayed with him from that day on. Then Samuel left and went to Ramah. Well that's quite dramatic isn't it? We're all prepared for the sacrifice. Samuel is looking at each of Jesse's sons and they're all good looking men. They must have looked like good fighters as well. Yet as these seven sons of Jesse pass by each one is rejected by the LORD. As the LORD said to Samuel, “God does not see as man sees, because a man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks into the heart.” You might remember Saul was a tall, good looking man when Samuel chose him to be king of Israel. But the LORD is looking for someone who was going to follow his directions when He gave it to him. Well like Joseph in the past, or the ugly step child, or Cinderella, there is someone missing. Samuel asks if there are any more sons. Jesse says he has one more out watching the sheep. Well they finally bring David in from the fields. When the LORD sees him, he says, “That's the one! Anoint him.” Now David wasn't' bad looking. He wasn't particularly short. But he was the baby of the family (at least as far as the boys went). They did not think much of him. Yet we know sitting out there in the field he had saved his sheep from both a bear and lion. The LORD looks at men's hearts. He knew David would do what He would command him, I'm speaking of directions as king. This same LORD who looks at men's hearts is our LORD Jesus Christ. John 2 says, “25He didn't need to be told about anyone, because He knew what was in him.” Jesus, David's descendant, was also anointed with the Holy Spirit at baptism, with ointment at Bethany, and set him apart from all men and make him both LORD and Christ by his resurrection from the dead. He is your king if you will have him. He has done all the LORD our Father commanded him, redeeming us from sin, death and the power of the devil. He has won for you eternal life and offers it to you freely to make you a citizen of his kingdom which has no end. Heavenly Father, as David was chosen to lead Israel, you chose Christ Jesus to be the Savior of the world. Strengthen our faith in him so we may be his citizens in his kingdom which has no end. The story in Acts 4 also tells us of Peter and John’s arrest while they preached that Jesus had resurrected from the dead. But while the magistrates, elders and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem for Peter’s trial before the Sanhedrin, the Bible says “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel…” (Acts 4:8). Notice that this incident wasn’t referring to Peter receiving the Holy Spirit, but that he was filled with the Spirit. . A Christian who has received the Holy Spirit without experiencing this continual infilling will live an ordinary life in this world. The Apostle Paul lived an extraordinary life because he understood the importance of being constantly filled with the Spirit. To the Church in Corinth, he said “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all…” 1 Corinthians 14:18). 📖 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:4 Hope is not some vague emotion that comes out of nowhere, like a stomachache. Hope is the confidence that the stupendous future promised to us by the word of the Spirit is going to really come true. Therefore, the way to be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with his word. The way to have the power of the Spirit is to believe the promises of his word. For it is the word of promise that fills us with hope, and hope fills us with joy, and joy overflows in the power and freedom to love our neighbor. And that is the fullness of the Holy Spirit. 📖 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. We were voyagers!

“We were voyagers! We were voyagers! We were voyagers! We were voyagerrrrs! ….

Why’d we stop?”

There used to be a day when the people of God sailed into adventure—carried along by the wind of the spirit into the kind of life and adventure that could not be described outside of His story, could not have happened without His Spirit, and could not be contained by fear.

And then we stopped.

We settled for “we have all we need right where we are”—when we have a God who had all he needed right where He was, but He left it all for us.

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who: Being in very nature God,  did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, But he made Himself nothing, Taking the very nature of a servant Being found in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself unto death, Even death on a cross!”                                                - Philippians 2:5-8

Moana’s people stopped voyaging because of selfishness, pride, and fear. Their selfish pride broke the created order, bringing death where there should have been life. And then, when they faced that death, they were filled with fear—a fear that caused them to reinterpret their own stories to make the island their way of life, instead of the voyage.

Eventually, they stopped voyaging because their fear made them forget who they were.

That’s why we stop, too.

But we are a people who are inhabited by the Spirit of Christ—the same Spirit that left comfort to rescue us, that charged into death to bring us life. “For God did not give us a Spirit of fear, but a Spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1”7). The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead inspires us to life, and leads us into an adventure the likes of which we could never design or imagine.

We cannot sail without the ocean of His prevenient grace, connecting us to those He loves. We cannot sail without the wind of His Spirit, driving us along, inspiring us to acts of His life. But in His Spirit, we are voyagers. And, led by His heart, we bring life wherever we go.

When I was in college, I was introduced (through song) to the following Lutheran prayer. May it be a prayer for each of us who choose not to live stranded by fear, but instead, who choose to voyage:

Lord God, You have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, By paths as yet untrod, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
