the moment regulus chooses his own friends for the first ever time - c.1972

The train ride was exhausting. That was the only way that Regulus could describe the Hell he was experiencing, and it hadn't even been an hour yet. Sirius seemed right at home, and was a completely different person to whoever he'd been at Grimmauld Place for the past year.

Regulus wanted to yell at him. To yell and to ask if he could not see what Regulus was going to have to do when they got to Hogwarts and to ask if he really thought that Regulus could be in Gryffindor with him without severe consequences from Walburga and Orion. Regulus understood that it wasn't Sirius's fault that he had no choice in his house anymore if he was going to survive, but he still despised his brother for it.

Regulus stood up as one of the boys, Peter, he thinks their name is, made a joke and pulled open the door to the compartment. Sirius barely glanced his way as Regulus walked out without another word. His brother just turned back to his friends, completely unbothered.

That was how Regulus Black found himself alone in the carriage. All of the compartment doors that he could see were completely closed. He wandered up and down the train for a little while, until a compartment door slid open just behind him. A boy about his age stuck his head out. Regulus didn't recognise him, or the girl who wound up sitting beside Regulus when he entered their compartment.

"Why have you been walking up and down for so long?" Barty asks him. Barty and Dorcas, he discovered their names were.

"Didn't want to spend any more time with my brother and his friends." Regulus shrugs, acts like he doesn't care about Sirius. It's easy now.

Dorcas's eyes widen. She's a year older than the two boys, and from her reaction alone Regulus can tell that she just made the connection to Sirius. However, when she doesn't say anything about his brother's friends and their antics, Regulus decides he likes her.

"How do you know each other then?" Regulus glances between his new acquaintances.

"We don't. I was alone in here until Barty forced his way in, decided I looked cool, and sat down. And he's not stopped talking since! Or at least, until you joined us." Dorcas seemed to have recovered enough from her surprise to speak now.

It wasn't that Regulus expected to be wandering up and down the train forever, but he found himself appreciating the company more than anticipated.

And, to make it even better, Dorcas was in Slytherin so they'd share a common room. Regulus didn't exactly sleep well away from home, or at home for that matter, so he was glad to know that he'd recognise at least one person in his common room from time to time.

Walburga and Orion would approve of Barty, he thinks. They'd be skeptical of him at first because of his father, but Regulus thinks that they'd accept him soon enough once they realise how much hatred Barty has for the senior Crouch.

Sirius's friends claimed that bad things came in threes, so maybe that meant that the three in the compartment would be bad for them. Regulus hoped that Sirius would hate him, so things would be easier, and so far he seemed to be on the right track.

"Regulus? Reg?" Dorcas touched a gentle hand to his shoulder, and Regulus was harshly brought back into the real world and away from his thoughts. The moment he flinched, she pulled her hand away like she'd been burned and he met her eyes. She didn't look pitying, just accepting of his boundaries. He knew he was right to accept her company.

"Honestly, Regulus. Were you even listening? I was asking what house you wanted to be in!" Barty grumbled.

"Slytherin." Regulus spoke without hesitation. "Slughorn is the head of house, right?"

Dorcas nodded. "He's a tough one to get to like you, so he might not warm up right away. Don't be sad if he doesn't like you so much at first."

Regulus just flashed her a rare grin. "I spoke to him last year. I think it's safe to say that he already likes me. Don't worry, I can share the fame with you two as well."

Barty looked impressed, and immediately leaned forwards to begin quizzing Regulus about how he knew.

Months later, as Regulus lounged on his bed in their dorm listening to his group of friends laugh and talk, he knew that the right choice had been made. His first choice, without Sirius pushing him to do one thing, and without Walburga and Orion pressuring him to do another. He was glad that his first choice had been the correct one.

My Hero Academia AU where Uraraka and Midoriya meet when they're like 6.

Series: Boku no Hero Academia AU Criteria: While on a trip to Mie with his mother, Izuku meets a young girl that doesn't seem to mind him being quirkless. AU title (optional): Finding Friendship

In need of getting some files for her job, Inko is going to Mie Province. Deciding that Izuku could use the excitement, she brings him along to go to the hero museum there, as a treat.

While at the office, she meets a Mrs. Uraraka who is there to get some legal advice from the team that Inko is meeting with. While they're talking, Izuku and Ochako are busy doing what kids do best. Play. Thankfully the office has a daycare room they can play in.

Ochako doesn't seem to care that he's quirkless, and he helps her with a frustration that plagues her about her own quirk. He teaches her how to curl her pinkie to support what she's holding, and not cause it to go floating away. All the while excited and asking her dozens of questions about her quirk.

They get several chances to video chat and play games over the year as Mrs. Uraraka finds Inko more helpful with legal matters for the business than the law office.

When All Might offered Izuku the chance to train with him, he had to ask if he could tell one other person, since she's trying to go to UA to be a hero too, and knows he's quirkless… forgetting about his bully Katsuki was planning on being there as well. Oh well it's not like she'll go feral on Bakugou for what he's done to Izuku again.
