Hi, I'm a magic nerd
heres a portion of the curriculum for the school of magic because yes
Magic Runes
Runes, specifically the Elder Futhark, are very popular with witches. They're used for symbolism, spells, and even divination, even though they're just another language's alphabet.
When we get to the Elder Scrolls universe, we see that runes here are the same: another language's alphabet used for magical workings.
Daedric, Dovahzul, Dwemeris, Falmer (being the old snow elves, not the modern Falmer), and "magic script" are the five languages with alternate alphabets:
(Screenshots of the Daedric runes, dragon script/Dovahzul, Dwemeris alphabet, Falmer script, and magic script alphabets taken from the Elder Scrolls wiki.)
Skyrim kicks this up a notch with rune spells, also known as magic runes. There are six rune spells, three of which are hidden behind the Dragonborn DLC: Fire, Frost, Shock, Ash, Frenzy, and Poison.
(Top row, left to right: Ash, Fire, Frenzy. Bottom row, left to right: Frost, Poison, Shock.)
Ash Rune
Ash Rune is an Expert-level Alteration spell, meaning it requires a skill level of 75 or above to cast. The runes for "T" and probably "H" are in the middle of it, and the other runes clockwise from the top are M-H?-Q-I-O-S-C-P. Its effect is a 30-second immobilization, making it very useful for wards to stop things from entering your space.
Fire Rune
Fire Rune is an Apprentice-level Destruction spell, meaning it requires a skill level of 25 or above to cast. The "F" rune is in the middle of it, and the other runes clockwise around it from the top are M-H?-Q-I-TH?-S-C-P. It deals 50 fire damage when it's set off, which is useful if you want to punish something for trying to break into your space.
Frenzy Rune
Frenzy Rune is an Adept-level Illusion spell, meaning it requires a skill level of 50 or above to cast. The rune in the middle of it is "I", and the other runes clockwise from the top are M-F-Q-I-TH?-S-C-P. It causes anyone up to level 20 to go into a frenzy, with nothing about if it wears off. It's great for those of you who want to strike madness into the people who disrespect your personal space and privacy.
Frost Rune
Frost Rune is almost exactly like Fire Rune, except with ice-based magic instead of fire-based magic. The "S" rune is in the middle of this one, and it's surrounded (clockwise from the top) by the runes M-F-Q-I-TH?-L-C-P.
Poison Rune
Poison Rune is an Adept-level Restoration spell, which means it requires a skill level of 50 or above to cast. Its central rune is "N" and the other runes (clockwise from the top) are M-H?-Q-A-TH?-S-C-P. It deals 3 points of poison damage every second for 30 seconds, aka 90 points of poison damage. Also good for keeping people out of your space and punishing them for not respecting your privacy.
Shock Rune
Like Frost Rune, Shock Rune is the same as Fire Rune except with a different element - in this case, lightning. The rune in the middle is "L" and the runes around it are M-F-Q-I-TH?-S-C-P.
Please appreciate the work I put into this section because I had to translate the runes by hand because there was no convenient list for all of the runes involved in the circles before now.
The usage of Daedric runes on these spells indicates some level of Daedric magic involved, but how much is unclear.
So how do they work?
When cast, the spells take about a second to charge up, then they can be "thrown" on either the ground or wall, creating a circle with magic symbols. They can be shot at with a projectile spell or Shout to manually trigger them. The Destruction perk "Rune Master" allows the caster to throw runes 5 times farther. Only one rune can be placed at a time. Attempting to place another while a rune is already in place will cause the previous rune to disappear. Dual casting a rune will boost its damage by double.
~Skyrim description
Rune spells in Skyrim work a lot like sigils do - you set them down and wait for them to be activated, either by yourself or by a target.
You can set them up on walls or the floor by scratching them into something or just a post-it note/the back of a photograph. These can have really interesting uses in curses and hexes, but more often than not they just act as stationary traps for whatever tries to get through your wards.
Bit of a sneak peek at my own rune for Jorvik Divined, fire!
if you wanna start the bleak falls barrow bossfight without getting the word of unrelenting force, cast fire rune on the boss' coffin and itll come out
just discovered this on a mage playthrough
Whenever I go into someone I dislike’s house, I usually cast a fire rune on their beds. I know in the game it may not effect them but I can never leave the Thalmor Embassy without ensuring that Elenwen’s bed will explode at one point or another.
