Seeing Leon’s name disappear from his phone was like a nightmare come true. Nothing could’ve prepared him for the redhead physically leaving the island, but perhaps it’s Gonta’s experience with friends leaving and then coming back that makes it all the more frightening -- because often when they come back, their memories are different.
He’s wondered a few times in Leon’s absence whether it’s for the best that they spend time apart, but that’s not enough to keep him from missing the other anyway; from hoping that he’ll come back. After all, he knows that if Leon isn’t here, then he’s probably just dead.
As soon as he spots him, it feels like his heart is going to come out of his chest.
It’s weird to feel nervous about someone he’s been so comfortable with, but he is essentially about to face one of two things: someone who will remember and love him or someone who won’t.
That nervousness is almost palpable, as he pipes up with his hands fidgeting together and his expression all worried:
“H-hey, Leon-kun... Are you, um... you?”
