So @quintessenceofdust88, we both ventured into mpreg because of Buck and Tommy, so what better than to celebrate Father's Day with a little Firefly snippet? (Please add on if you want ❤️)
---
Buck should learn his lesson and not plan grand gestures, but it's their first Father's Day and he wants to celebrate them both.
Unfortunately, that means that all three of them are now currently stuck at the top of a ferris wheel with rapidly drooping daisies and an increasingly cranky baby. And there's a lightning storm incoming that strangely didn't show on any forecast until approximately half an hour ago, so no one is allowed onto the structure to fix it.
"Honey, in case of, uh, anything, I just wanna say, I love you and I don't blame you," Tommy says while bouncing a wailing Rory in his arms.
Buck glares tearfully at him. "I do! I don't want us to die in a ferris wheel in the middle of a storm!" He sniffles and wipes at his eyes with Rory's towel. "I just wanted to celebrate our first Father's Day!"
"Well, firsts can be lasts, right?"
"I will push you out of here myself if you weren't carrying Rory, I swear to God."

Warm light spilled out of the galley, the various conversations of Serenity's crew filling the air.
"Ok, but no," Wash said, scraping rice onto his plate before blindly passing the dish to his wife. "How, in the ever loving hell, did your nephew manage to block the fuel back-up line? It's supposed to be impossible in the Wrix engines!"
"I'm telling ya! My uncle took the whole thing apart and he still ain't sure. The line managed to tie itself in knots - "
"Please tell me you have pictures, I need to see this - "
"This is one hell of a feast, Shepherd. Thank you," Zoë said and Book smiled, inclining his head.
"I should be thanking you for getting me the produce."
"Gave me an excuse to get off the ship," Jayne interrupted, spearing a baby potato with his knife. At the other end of the table, Simon made a face and River laughed, stealing a piece of meat off her brother's plate when he wasn't looking.
Smiling slightly, Mal caught Inara's eye and for a second, it felt as if time had stopped, neither of them willing to look away first.
A loud burst of laughter made them start. Inara's eyes dropped down to her plate while the captain turned to look at the rest of his crew.
All of them were laughing and talking, their faces bright, the clinking of cutlery mixing perfectly with the soft rumbling of the ship's engine.
Clearing his throat, Mal lifted his cup, his eyes soft.
"To Serenity," he said.
The table quietened as they all scrambled to lift their own.
"To a new year," Book added.
"To family," River whispered.
"To family," everyone echoed and took a sip.
Conversation slowly trickled back in and Mal leaned back in his chair, contentment burning bright in his chest.
Sure, the Alliance were still on their tail and money was tight while jobs were scarce but at least they were still flying. It wasn't much but it was enough.
Author's note-
Happy belated/early new year! See y'all next year with more fics and a few surprises <3
“So that was definitely weird, right?” Jayne says once Mal’s footsteps have receded down the hallway.
“It was a little weird,” Kaylee agrees.
“He could just be having a bad morning,” Zoe points out. “We all have ‘em. Be crazy not to, after…after.”
A solemn quiet falls over the group. They all know what she’s talking about. Who she’s talking about. It’s been six months, but the trauma still feels fresh, on some days more than others. The occasional emotional outburst from some member of the crew is all but guaranteed, especially during these long stretches of travel. But something tells Simon that there’s something else going on. He can’t put his finger on what, exactly that something is, but there’s a heavy dread settling into the pit of his stomach that he can’t shake.
“I’m going to go check on him,” he says. He’s barely gotten the words out when River’s voice crackles over the PA.
“Simon!” She sounds frantic. “I need you!”
He’s already moving, the others close behind him as he runs. “River!” he calls as he gets closer. He hurries up the steps and his heart jumps into his throat.
Mal is on the floor. His back is arched, his limbs rigid, fingers curled, and his body is jerking, guttural noises escaping him. River is crouched in the chair, her hands over her ears, tears streaming down her face.
“What’s going on?” Zoe asks.
Simon doesn’t answer, at first, and then Kaylee says, “Simon?”
The fear in her voice is enough to rouse Simon from the flurry of his thoughts and he kneels down next to the captain. “He’s seizing.” He looks up at River. “River?”
She raises her head and looks at him and the fear in her eyes makes his heart ache.
“Did anything happen before the seizure started?”
“His head hurt,” River answers, her voice small.
Simon nods. “Alright. That isn’t unusual, headaches can happen before seizures. Did he say anything to you?”
“He said I’m okay. But he isn’t okay.”
“He will be,” Simon says, trying to sound more confident than he feels. “He will be, mei mei. Kaylee, I need you to--” he begins. He’s about to tell her where to find the diazepam when Mal’s seizure comes to a stop, his body relaxing and his breaths evening out. It had been a short seizure, which is something at least. “I need you to stay with River, please. Jayne, I’ll need your help getting the captain to the infirmary.”
“What’s goin’ on?” Kaylee asks as Jayne moves into the cramped space.
“I…” Simon keenly aware of the fact that the others are looking to him for answers. He swallows. “I don’t know yet. But I’m going to figure it out.”
“Why ain’t he wakin’ up?” Jayne asks.
“It can take a few minutes,” Simon answers. “Here, take his arm.”
The task of getting Mal up is made somewhat more difficult by the cramped space, but he and Jayne manage it, supporting the unconscious captain between them. Zoe follows at their heels as they maneuver Mal into the hallway and head for the infirmary.
“Help me get him onto the bed,” Simon says, and Zoe jumps in, the three of them working together to get Mal settled on the exam bed. It’s while they’re doing this that Simon notices the heat radiating from the captain, and he presses the back of his hand to Mal’s forehead, frowning.
“What is it?” Zoe asks.
“He’s burning up,” Simon says, already moving to get an IV prepped. He’s just inserted the needle and taped it down when Mal begins to stir. “Captain?”
Mal lets out a groan, then slowly grimaces, eyes moving beneath the lids. When they open, they have a glassy, far-off look.
“Captain? Mal, are you with me?”
Mal frowns, looking around the infirmary with a puzzled look on his face. “Where’d…Wash?”
Simon’s stomach knots. He glances up at Zoe. She’s standing completely still, her expression stiff and unreadable. Though she doesn’t show it, Simon knows that she’s shaken.
“Wash, ‘m sorry…” Mal murmurs.
“Mal, do you know where you are?” Simon says. “I’m going to give you some medicine to bring your fever down…Captain, can you hear me?”
Mal has gone still, his eyes glazed and staring at nothing. And then they roll back in his head and his body starts to jerk.
“Damn it, he’s seizing again!” Simon says, immediately turning to go through drawers.
“Well, make it stop!” Jayne practically growls it.
“I will, I just need to find…Here we go!” Simon pulls out the autoinjector and turns back to Mal, jamming it against Mal’s upper thigh. He holds it there for a three-count before setting it aside. “Alright, come on Captain…”
Jayne moves forward a few steps, staring at Mal with wide eyes, face pale. “It ain’t workin’.”
“Just give it a little time,” Simon says. The seconds feel like an eternity, but finally, after ninety-seven of them (Simon counts), the seizure stops and Mal’s body relaxes.
“What now?” Zoe asks. She sounds tired. Haggard.
Simon lets out a long breath, running one hand through his hair. “I’m going to run some tests, and keep an eye on his vitals…You two don’t need to stay here. I’ll let you know if I need any help.”
“You’ll tell me if somethin’ happens?” Jayne says.
“Of course.”
Jayne nods and steps out of the little infirmary. Simon turns to Zoe but she just shakes her head once.
“I’m not goin’ anywhere.”
Simon doesn’t argue with her. He knows better than that, and though neither of them are in the mood for conversation he’s grateful for the company. She finds a place to sit while Simon starts the task of drawing blood. He looks at his captain’s slack face, shiny with sweat, and tries to ignore the worry that’s eating at him.

Fandom: Firefly
Simon was tired. Dead on his feet. They’d finished a job some hours ago and Simon had, in a quite possibly stupid move, agreed to take over a shift for Wash who'd thrown his back out during the heist. Somehow. From the cockpit of Serenity. Simon wasn't one-hundred percent convinced he hadn't been faking in order to spend some more time with his wife. But oh well, he was here now, and he had to make the best of it.
Which meant straining his eyes in order to keep them open.
“Well, you look mighty attentive,” a voice said from behind him. Simon didn't have to turn around to know who it was.
“I'm attentive enough,” Simon said through a yawn.
“Oh, I can see that.”
Simon slowly turned his chair around to face Mal.
“Problem?” Simon asked, fighting back another yawn so fiercely he's sure his face looked ridiculous.
Mal chuckled, then held out his hand, “C’mon.”
“Nooo,” Simon whined, head thunking back on the headrest of his seat, “What do you want?”
“I want you to come here,” Mal said, grabbing Simon's hand and tugging.
Simon groaned in complaint, but nevertheless got up, thanks much to the strength of Mal who tugged all the harder when he saw how limp his companion was.
Once on his feet he really got the meaning of that saying ‘dead on your feet'. He swayed back and forth a little, feeling like he might just collapse.
That's when Mal pulled him in close, one hand abandoning Simon's and finding its way to the small of Simon's back.
It took a bleary moment for Simon to realize they were dancing. Once he realized he let out a laugh and thunked his head down on Simon's shoulder.
“I'm so tired,” Simon said, which was somehow an understatement. He'd a few more so's or maybe even a very to get the point across.
“I know sweetheart,” Mal said, swaying them back and forth gently.
“Mmm,” Simon hummed, being lulled to sleep by the swaying.
Mal chuckled again.
“What is it?” Simon asked, another yawn chasing the tail-end of his words.
“I'm just realizing I'll probably have to carry you back to bed.”
“You will not!” Simon said loudly in protest, jerking his head up.
They stared at each other.
“Hi,” Mal said with a smile.
“Hi,” Simon echoed with a begrudgingly dopey smile of his own.
“Was worried about you down there,” Mal's eyes went cold, hard, and somewhere far off.
Simon brought his hand up to Mal's face, “I'm alright.”
“I know.”
“And I'm here, with you.”
“Know that too, darling.”
Simon kissed him. “Don't do that.”
"Mmm,” Mal hummed, opening his eyes, “Do what?”
“Think ‘what if’.”
“Is that Doctor's orders?”
“Yes.”
Mal laughed again, “Alright.”
Simon loved to hear the sound of that laugh, though he's not sure if he would ever admit it.
“And Mal?”
“Yeah?”
“I'm going to fall asleep now.”
Another laugh, “Alright, sweetheart.”
Simon laid his head back down on Mal's shoulder.
A little later he was vaguely aware of being lifted in carried, and the next thing he knew was nuzzling into his own pillow.
But when he didn’t feel that warm presence cuddle up behind him he was so familiar with now, he reached out blindly behind him, “Wait.” he said once he had a hold of a strong forearm.
“You gotta let go now, darlin'.”
“No,” Simon opened his eyes, turned his head so he could see Mal's figure looming over the bed, “Stay.”
“I'll be back soon. Gotta finish your shift. Be real quick.”
“I had hours left.” Simon pouted.
“Trust me, darlin', you won't even notice,” And then Mal was extracting his hand and walking away. Simon watched until he was up the ladder and out of the room.
Simon turned back to his pillow, sleep-addled mind determined not to fall into slumber.
Until it did.
And seemingly moments later he was woken back up by someone crawling into bed with him. Before Simon could open his eyes and chastise Mal for leaving, a warm arm wrapped around his middle, and an even warmer body pressed up behind him.
“Mal,” Simon sighed out, content.
He felt a kiss to his cheek, and like a sleeping potion, it had Simon going back under in an instant.
Thanks for reading! I had to add some Simon/Mal to this fluff fest <3 This story can also be found over on AO3! Also SUPER SORRY I didn't post this on the day of. Time just sort of...slipped through my fingers heh...sorry
