Ahhh....my first tarot set...what can I say about this insightful deck?
I discovered this lovely Rider Waite tarot deck while browsing my favorite bookshop. I had never so much as touched a tarot card before. Before even laying eyes on them I was intrinsically pulled to this deck. It has been a beautiful experience and I cherish them deeply.

Your First Tarot Deck
How did you pick it? I’d love to find out other people’s experiences with picking their first deck. I am feeling the pull to get one, and I’ve searched book stores and etsy (not extensively) but I just feel restless about it, with no specific one calling me. I know it’s cliche to say but I always thought your first deck would feel unique and special. Can a deck truly click with you while browsing them online or is it just the experience of working with several decks where you discover which one genuinely fits you?
Got my first tarot deck!
When I opened the cards to look at them my sister pointed out they have to be gifted by a Wiccan to work properly...well, she’s not wrong?
30 Day Questions
Day 5: When and where did I give my first reading?
So this is a fun story.
There was this old abandoned asylum in our city that had been shut down suddenly because of mistreatment and too many deaths (unexplained aka murder from neglect, etc) in the facility. (Really, it was just one of those state-run homes for people who can’t take care of themselves anymore and don’t have someone else to. It was abandoned because of budget cuts, but the rumor sounds cooler.) It’s been torn down since then.
The buildings were surrounded by chain link fence and overgrown weeds and on a usual police patrol schedule. But it was like a rite of passage to break in there. Everyone had their stories - being touched/scratched, hearing voices, chairs being moved or thrown across the room, beds creaking, doors opening and closing.
So a group of my friends and me decided we’d do it on Halloween. And, of course, my friend who bought me the Tarot deck and I decided that would be the perfect place and perfect night to do it.
It was the first time I did a reading ever. We had candles, we whispered in case the cops came by, any noise was a ghost (because the broken in windows and collapsed roofs in other buildings wouldn’t let any critter in to make noise). The vibe was already creepy. Then the tension from breaking in. Then “witchy” Tarot cards.
It was a simple three card spread. I don’t remember what I pulled, but I know when we saw that big bright light sweep through the windows in the room we snatched up our shit and ran. Every man for himself.
That was the perfect way for me to begin Tarot in my opinion. Super dramatic, over the top, and fumbling because I didn’t know what to do, tried to look like I did, and struggled so hard with shuffling those big ass cards.
tl;dr A crappy old building my senior year in high school to the guy who bought me my first deck
My first tarot deck was the Golden Tarot by Liz Dean and Melissa Luanay. Honestly, though I used this deck for a year, I was pretty frustrated by the end because the Minor Arcana were just pip cards, They just had 5 swords arranged as they would be on a playing card. It made it very difficult to remember the meanings. When my cat ate a lot of the deck, I was a little relieved, because I could stop using it. I love the temperance card though, and stuck that in my grimoire.
