A lot of strange things had happened since Jean-Luc became captain of the Enterprise. Even from his very first day, nothing had ever been quite... normal. Then again, ‘normal’ was a matter of perspective. And the Enterprise, as the Federation flagship, was far from a normal ship with a normal voyage.
Now, though, something was very, very abnormal. He and Q had gotten into another petty argument about history, and power, and every other moral issue they had been over again and again. Q had said he was being ‘arrogant, self-righteous, and ungrateful to those who came before’. To which Picard had argued that he was very well aware of what good people of the past had done.
“I’m not saying that NASA was worthless. I’m saying that that it was simply... very primitive compared to where we are now.”
And then, without any more warning, Picard wasn’t on the Enterprise. He was... well, he wasn’t entirely sure where he was. But there was another man, and he did know who he was.
“Mark Watney?”

This wasn’t Starfleet.
Jim had managed to crash land the shuttle he’d been traveling in a few miles north of here. Traveling on foot in the hopes that he’d find some remnants of Starfleet close by. Or at least something – anything – that would provide him with some reassurance that he had not fallen victim to time travel. It wasn’t unheard of, at least in Jim’s day in age.
The constant stares that the captain was receiving was not entirely reassuring. Had they not seen a member of Starfleet before? His gaze eventually fell upon a familiar face. One that he had not seen before in person, but one that he had read about a countless number of times.
“Watney. You’re Mark Watney. The astronaut that was stranded on Mars.” Excitement filled his voice until the meaning finally settled in. He had, indeed, traveled back in time. “Shit.”
