Cleaned some shit out yesterday. Algae and detritus and all sorts of junk had taken over, (and the filter wasn’t working???) so after two years we needed a reboot.

Put the fish plants and shrimp in a kritter keeper, then tore everything down. I’d originally laid the substrate down with a bottom layer of fluorite. The java moss and anacharis don’t need it though, and two years of gravel vacuuming mixed it into my more decorative substrate. I removed it all and sorted it like a fucking lunatic. No more fluorite! Gravel and stones were boiled and scrubbed of algae. The large rock sat in bleach, as it was too far gone for scrubbing. It’s drying safely now and I’ll put it back in soon. I emptied out the whole tank and scrubbed it down with water and a sponge, then put it all back together again. Turns out the filter just needed the adjustment knob moved, as something had got it stuck in a completely turned off position.

Here’s to another (hopeful) two years!

i really like my little old koi betta and i know it’s optimistic but i hope he makes it at least to three. had him two years and four months so far and despite his suspicious lumpiness he seems ok!

super sad news. Lumpy koi boi is probably not long for this earth. Last night I noticed his abdomen had swollen more, and on one side scales had fallen off to reveal what might be an ulcer. If anyone has experienced this and has advice for treatment, I’d really appreciate it. He’s acting pretty normal for the time being, but is ever so slightly slower than usual.
