The TARDIS fit perfectly in the Noble-Temple back yard. It complimented the style of Rose’s shed - or maybe it was the other way around - and no one ever asked questions when it just showed up there one day and stayed.

Hidden by a hedge of tall shrubbery, no one ever saw the skinny man emerge from the blue box each morning, hair tousled as if he’d slept there, clad in pajama pants and t-shirts with sayings like “Bowties are cool” and “My other body is traveling the universe” printed on them.

No one saw Donna Noble-Temple greet the man each morning at the back door with a fresh cup of coffee and a hug, and no one saw them in the evenings drinking wine and looking up at the stars until the wee hours. So no one asked questions about the strange man.

Almost no one. Nerys always was nosey.

“I can’t have a cold. Time Lords don’t get colds,” the Doctor protested.

Donna had known this moment would come. The moment when the Doctor would realize that maybe he wasn’t the usual Time Lord any more. Maybe he was something else.

The Doctor sneezed again, loudly, and then blew his nose into the handkerchief Donna handed him. “I must be allergic to something,” he insisted. “This handkerchief, probably!”

Donna only shook her head at him, her eyes bright with sympathy and compassion. He needed to come to this realization on his own. It would be easier.

The Doctor sniffled and tried to clear his throat. “You know, you don’t realize how much you take breathing for granted…” he trailed off as he met Donna’s eyes and all of his bravado dissolved into thin air. “Donna,” he whined, sticking out his lower lip rather pathetically, “Time Lords don’t get colds.”

“Well, we’ve always suspected you were special,” Donna said with a smile. This was probably as close as they were going to get today, but it was a start. She wrapped an arm around his shoulders and added, “Come on into the house and let me take care of you.”

The bees are still disappearing, Donna remembered suddenly. In her previous adventures with the Doctor, the bees disappearing had been an important piece of the puzzle that led them to find dozens of missing planets.

But they fixed all that, years ago. Didn’t they?

So why are the bees still disappearing?

Donna wanted to ask the Doctor, but she had laid down the law: no more wild adventures until he’s feeling better. It would be hypocritical of her to tempt him with a mystery.

So, rather uncharacteristically, Donna Noble kept her mouth shut on the subject of bees. For now.

“Donna, who is this man?” Nerys demanded one night while cleaning up the dishes from dinner.

Donna glanced to the table where the Doctor still sat chatting with Shaun and Rose. “That’s the Doctor,” she replied sharply. “He is my best friend in the entire universe and you should get used to him being around.”

“Ridiculous. How could he be your best friend in the entire universe if I’ve never even heard of him before?” Nerys huffed, clearly a bit hurt by the revelation that she was not Donna’s best friend in the entire universe. “Are you having an affair with him?” she asked, lowering her voice conspiratorially, “is Shaun??”

Donna, having had quite enough of this ridiculous line of questioning, declared “Absolutely not. What is wrong with you?” Then a mischievous look crossed her face and she added in a whisper, “Besides, he’s been in love with Rose for as long as I can remember.”

Nerys’ jaw dropped and her eyes looked ready to bug out of her head as she watched Donna join her family and “best friend in the entire universe” at the table.

In love with Rose?!?

Maybe it was time Nerys found some new friends.

It’s almost always Brenda who needs someone to look after her. She’s the one who forgets to eat, or works too late, or feels like shit after engineering another morally ambiguous end to a case.

And she’s grateful to have Sharon for that — so, incredibly grateful — but sometimes she wonders if she’s really pulling her weight in this relationship.

So Brenda wouldn’t say she’s glad to find Sharon sitting at her desk at the end of the day with her head in her hands… but she does appreciate any opportunity to return the favor.

“Long day?” she asks, stepping behind the desk and pressing a light kiss into Sharon’s hair.

“Mmm, headache,” Sharon acknowledges, continuing to rub her temples.

Brenda’s hands move automatically — one going to the base of Sharon’s skull where she knows she holds the most tension, and the other stretching across her forehead to replace Sharon’s own hands at her temples. “Lean back,” she coaxes gently, “I’ve got you.”

Sharon complies willingly and moans in relief as the tension begins to release under Brenda’s skilled fingers. As the pain subsides, Sharon’s only coherent thought is that she is so, incredibly grateful to have Brenda looking after her.

Sharon’s hand covered Brenda’s in her lap, calming its fidgeting as they waited for Will Pope to process the information. He wasn’t the ideal first person to tell about their relationship, but he was their boss and Sharon had insisted they follow the rules.

“This is why Fritz left?” He asked finally. As if that could possibly be the point.

“Why don’t you ask him yourself? You two can form a club: Assholes Who Turned Brenda Leigh Johnson Off of Men,” Sharon sniped protectively.

Surprisingly, Brenda took the more diplomatic route. “I don’t think that’s any of your business, Will,” she declared calmly, withdrawing her hand and shooting her girlfriend an exasperated look.

“Now,” Brenda said, focusing her glare back at Pope, “is there anything else you need from us? Officially?”

For once, Will Pope seemed at a loss for words and he just shook his head dumbly.

“Fine,” Brenda said curtly as she stood, grabbing Sharon’s hand again and pulling her up too. Just before they reached the door, Brenda turned and took Sharon by the shoulders, making sure that Pope had a good view of both their faces. “And honey, don’t you ever forget: it wasn’t them that turned me off. You just turn me on more,” she purred with a saucy smile. Expertly skating the line between being professional in front of her boss and taunting her asshole ex, Brenda’s lips lingered for just a moment over Sharon’s blushing cheek and then she led her from the office.

Even as flustered as she was, Sharon still remembered her manners and as she pulled the door closed behind them, she called back “Thank you for your time, Chief.” Then, just because she couldn’t help herself, she smirked and added, right before the door shut, “Thank you so much.”

It wasn’t the lingering glances, or that they stood just a little too close.

It wasn’t the extended meetings in Chief Johnson’s office with the blinds drawn, or when they started taking their lunches around the same time.

It wasn’t even when Tao swore up and down that he saw them out to dinner together, holding hands across the table (no one believed him without definitive evidence).

No, the squad figured it out one morning after pulling an all-nighter, when everyone was loopy from lack of sleep.

That was the morning that the chief sprung for fancy coffees for the whole squad, just so she could get herself some over-caffeinated sugary blended thing covered with whipped cream. The whipped cream ended up on her nose, of course, and right there in front of the whole squad, the captain wiped the whipped cream away and then licked it off of her own thumb with a wink while the chief grinned at her.

The squad may have been exhausted … but they werestill the best detectives in LA.

When the women moved to Chief Johnson’s office, Tao turned to the bullpen with hand outstretched and a know-it-all smirk. “Pay up, gentlemen!”

Shaun tiptoed into the bedroom, balancing a breakfast tray in one hand while easing the door closed with the other. He placed the tray on the bed side table and slid back into bed with his wife. She wasn’t exactly a morning person, but lately it had been difficult to get her alone and if he wanted to celebrate their anniversary in private, it would have to be now.

“Donna,” he whispered, kissing her ear. He continued to kiss a path down her jaw to her lips where she met him with something between a kiss and a groan. “Good morning, sweetheart. Rise and shine,” he teased softly.

“G’morning. Time?” she grumbled, eyes still closed, although she was smiling.

Shaun ignored the question and instead replied, “I made breakfast… and we’re all alone,” he added suggestively. 

Donna stretched and opened one eye to look at her doting husband. “Doctor,” she reminded him warily. 

“I drugged him,” Shaun whispered playfully and leaned in to kiss her again.

“You what?!” Donna exclaimed in a panic, shooting straight up in bed and knocking Shaun sideways.

Shaun recovered his balance in time to rest both hands on her shoulders and keep her from running out of the room. “Hey, it was a joke,” he reassured her. “He took Rose for a long brunch. For our anniversary.”

“Oh,” Donna said sheepishly. 

“Oh! It’s our anniversary! Oh, happy anniversary, my darling!” she exclaimed, planting a big wet kiss right on his lips. “How did I ever get so lucky?” she asked, snuggling into his side as Shaun settled them back against the headboard.

“Oh no, I’m the lucky one,” Shaun insisted, and lifted the tray to rest across their laps. “Coffee?”

“Mmm maybe later,” she replied, pushing the tray away and leaning in for another kiss.
