I don’t think I’ve done a flat me since I quit Instagram earlier this year but here we go. I’m racing tomorrow in a 5k open XC event, same course I took my team to last week for an invitational. It’s a doozy and they all complained about how hard the course was last week. But I figure this gives me the chance to show I’m right there in the fight with them. Seasonal outfit with Jack o’ Lantern shorts and autumn leaf socks, might as well have fun with it. I could have worn my Saucony Havok XC spikes but I don’t think I’m quite ready to spike up yet. I’ll go with my carbon plated Saucony Endorphin Edge trail racers instead. I’m not expecting to be fast tomorrow but hopefully I get a good fitness test out of this.

#flatme is taking shape for tomorrow morning's #glorydays5k. This will be a benchmark race in my training for #usatfxcnationals in December and I definitely want to nail down a solid time that will give me confidence. And that's just the beginning of my day at this event, because after that I switch to #xccoach mode and guide my #leelancersxc runners though the #glorydaysinvitational meet, one of the top regional #highschoolxc meets in the area. #flatme setup for #rrcaclubchallenge tomorrow morning. The @dcroadrunners club singlet is ready and if it’s raining, the top may be covered up by the jacket at right, but then I’ve also got the club cap to signify my team. And I pulled out my old #nikefreeshield flats for my footwear. After not seeing much action for a long time, in the last few months these Frees have seen a lot of work (yep, it looks like another rainy race). I go to them whenever the racing conditions get wet. If the rain stays away I can always go back to the @altrarunning Escalantes that I have trained in all season; they’re in my bag, just in case.

This is a B race for me tomorrow, a benchmark to assess fitness for @cucb #cherryblossomtenmiler in 6 weeks. And with 6 weeks of training behind me, you could say this will be my midterm report card. The “A” goal would be a sub-70 time, probably out of reach tomorrow. The B goal is to be in the 72-73 range. C goal? At least hit the current @mcmillanrunning calculator prediction of a mid-75 time.

#flatme #flatrunner setup is complete for #gwparkwayclassic10miler tomorrow morning. As I usually do in larger local races I'll wear my @dcroadrunners singlet. Shoes will be the @nike lunartempo as that pair has carried me through all my quality workouts and @cucb 2 weeks ago. I may have a little too much here with temperature at the start forecast to be 47° and heading into the 50s during the race. But I'd rather be able to peel back something right before I check my gear. Not feeling much stress about this one. #raceday tomorrow, the #fairfaxholidayhalf and it's going to be a cold and blustery one. So #flatme is geared up appropriately. @mizunorunning #breaththermo hat, gloves and tights, @underarmour #coldgear turtleneck base layer shirt, @asics @dcroadrunners long sleeve tech shirt, @balega_international socks, and @topoathletic MT-2 trail racing flats. This combo worked pretty well for me when I ran a very chilly half marathon two years ago and won the men's masters division. Not sure if that type of result is in store tomorrow, though. My training has not been what I hoped and the comeback from last year's #kneeinjury is still a work in progress. I really think my biggest goal tomorrow is to get through this feeling strong and with the knee holding up well -- that will be the test to determine whether I return to marathons in 2018 or possibly hang it up on that distance. I've done 14 marathons, including the @bostonmarathon 4 times, always as a qualifier. Not a bad career if it has to end there.
