The Ravens in our tallest tree fledged this morning. It was high drama, mom and dad keeping watch while their young took their first flight. A sudden cacophony as a Buzzard came sweeping in and mom and dad morphed into a screaming pair of spinning black demons diving straight at it. The fledglings were fine. This one is sitting on our chimney pot afterwards.

this is @batmanisagatewaydrug s 2025 book bingo. this is my first update bc up until now i hadn’t felt like i had read enough books LOL. in fact i hadn’t even finished a book this year until july. but it’s okay! we’re on the train now! book list, reviews/rambles/complete nonsense found under the cut.

FANTASY: i reread The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski and decided to slot it into the fantasy square. thinking about it now i could have put it in like two other places but fantasy will do fine; maybe having such a gimme will encourage experimentation. anyway The Last Wish is a short story collection about Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher, and is chronologically the first book in the Witcher series. i love this girlfail flop witcher so bad he sucks. i love him. i also am deeply in love with Sapkowski’s universe (the reread is so that i can hopefully finish the series for real this time), including the magic rules which are almost entirely vibes based. generally fairy tale retellings don’t work for me, and i think the reason they work for me here is because of the weird ass medieval ass alien ass earth. and Geralt, the girlfail. i love him ur honor

ANIMAL ON THE COVER: i read Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry for a book club this past july, and when i tell you it BLEW me out of the water… i could not exaggerate ENOUGH about this book. it tells the tale of a group of cowboys, formerly texas rangers, as the frontier begins to catch up to them and they begin a cattle drive from texas to montana. it is brutally long and death is everywhere, and i cried so hard at the end i almost threw up. i have a picture of me crying. no u cannot see it.

SCIENCE FICTION: i’ve been listening to the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey on audiobook basically on a loop ever since i listened to them the first time. Jefferson Mays, the narrator, does an unparalleled job portraying the cast and world of what is, bar none, my absolute favorite science fiction series of all time. and im one of those people who are weird and annoying about dune. point is, my boyfriend and i took a road trip earlier this summer and i’ve been listening to the books with him this time, so we listened to, like, the back half of book four and all of five and six, maybe? i’m lumping them all together in the science fiction box and getting on a soapbox to tell you to READ THE EXPANSE. HASHTAG I LOVE AMOS AMOS FOREVER LAST MAN STANDING. HASHTAG AMOS. MY MAN.

PUBLISHED IN THE AUGHTS: Octavia Butler’s Fledgeling was published in 2005, and i picked it up on the sex witch’s recommendation. fucking phenomenal i cannot wait to read more Butler. truly the fact that this series was stolen from us by her untimely death is so evil, i would have read seven thousand books about my beloved child vampire and her weird harem. love, love, love.

I fledgling Redd-Bellied woodpecker falls from a tree during a particularly bad storm. I approached it but it scurried off, though it did not fly.

Is it too small to fly?

Will it survive? I truly hope it will....

The youngest members of the starling gang are starting to fledge! Had this little one turn up in the garden today.
