Fall color is appearing around the park, especially vine maples along roads on the east side of the park. It is still early for trees like red alder and big leaf maple. However at Sunrise, fall color comes not from trees but from much smaller subalpine meadow plants like fleeceflower (Polygonum newberryi). Also known as Newberry’s knotweed or alpine knotweed, this plant’s leaves turn bright red in autumn. Where are you finding fall color in the park?
Note that Sunrise Road is open until October 10, weather dependent, but the Sunrise Visitor Center and Day Lodge have closed for the season. Bring everything you will need, including food and water, if planning a visit.
