The introduction of the Tringham brothers will always have a special place in my heart

A few shots I'm pretty fond of in this clip alone

Aside from the obvious fact of me just liking them as characters and being enamored by the chemistry they have with Ed and Al, I really appreciate how they work as foils to the brothers as well and make them see their relationship with alchemy in a different light.

The Other Brothers Elric Part 2 gives us way more info to work with, but Part 1 alone brings a number of interesting points to light.

Fletcher and Al are in the unique position of not only being the younger brothers of the quad, but often the voices of reason that try to steer their older brothers out of trouble. While Al tries to get Ed to actually think of why their names are being used rather than how (and he makes sure to bring up how their imposters aren't doing anything bad per se with their names), Fletcher tries to get Russell to think of the gravity of their actions as they immerse themselves into their father's work. What stands out the most to me though is how Al immediately recognizes that Fletcher isn't comfortable with what he and Russell are doing, despite not even knowing yet that what they're doing is affecting the town, because he just knows, he's been there and he's living through the consequences of not stopping his own brother from going too far.

I especially like how Al is stern about Fletcher needing to be the one who opens Russell's eyes because, much like Ed, hearing a harsh truth and being told that he's doing something wrong from someone else rather than his own flesh and blood would just hurt him more.

Ed recognizes the similarities he and Al share with Russell and Fletcher as well, try as he might to deny such a claim at first. While Ed and Al have a strained relationship with Hohenheim, which is unlike the love and admiration Russell and Fletcher have for their father Nash, there's no denying that the four of them all discovered and learned alchemy because of their fathers and what they left behind in their absences. Ed understandably feels anger with the other brothers, namely Russell, for continuing Nash's studies in a valiant attempt to finish his work in the right hands. While he hadn't planned on going as far as Mugear was intent on going to farm the red stones, the mere existence of the red water did more harm than good to the people of Xenotime and he stubbornly ignored that.

And I like what Ed tells them before the final confrontation: to move on and live their own lives without trying to live by someone else's example, or under someone else's name. It's all too easy to point out how hypocritical he's being by saying that when he so fervidly operates on the principle of Equivalent Exchange, a principle he knows has its own flaws and cannot be applicable to every problem in life, even more so when there's no doubting the influence Hohenheim directly and indirectly had on him and Al. But they're trying to reach their goal and get their bodies back to normal on their own terms, and their time spent in Xenotime prevented Russell and Fletcher from making the same mistakes they made years prior.

Belated addendum: I'm hypnotized by Russell and Ed both being obsessed with the whole "creating a Philosopher's Stone" goal, it's so on the nose but so tasty, good food for the soul—

guys. do u wonder how long russell waited for ed to come back. he screamed at him to come back but we dont see him ever again since then. do u think he knew anything that happened or do u think he and fletcher went home before they knew and no one bothered to find them??? that's probably what happened that is so sad. they weren't best friends by any means but it's clear that russell and fletcher cared about the elrics. they couldn't even have talked to al because he wouldn't have remembered them. and he wouldn't have even heard any stories unless they were to ones to tell him. what if they went back to central to find al and he wasn't there??? they would have no way of finding him in resembool becoz they had no clue the elrics live there. wow. i'm sad now guys
