Ant-like Scavenger Fly (Family Sepsidae, possibly Nemopoda nitidula), in my backyard, May 2018. These flies certainly are "ant-like" in appearance, but move very much like flies. This one was dancing about on a leaf in my garden and shaking its wings, performing some sort of courtship display. Sepsid Flies develop as larvae in dung or carrion, or even compost (decaying plant as opposed to animal matter). Picture-winged Fly (Family Ulidiidae) on the Lynn Valley Trail. I'm not sure of the species, but most of the 700 species of Picture-winged Flies feed on decaying plant matter as larvae. These flies were doing dances on the railing of a bridge on the trail, displaying their "picture wings".
