Honestly, I gotta give Starbound credit for being the only sci-fi series where I find all the main races interesting. This is why sci-fi shouldn't just copy Fantasy Race Archetypes, your world is much more interesting when I don't know everything going in.

The first image is a basic concept, while the second is more fleshed out.

These are my redesigned florans. They're plant-based semi-arboreal predators that have a knack for technology, and who are often misinterpreted as stupid brutes when the galactic translators make their language sound like caveman-speak to other races.

My rework extends not only to their appearance, but to their biology and society. MUCH more below the cut.

Healthy adult florans have a flower-based crest on the back of the head, which is most vivid during their mating season. Floran mating season comes with large-scale festivities, where several tribes meet to partake in sports, hunting, feasting, and dancing. Sports, fesating, and hunting help with inter-tribe relationships, while hunting and dancing are both key to floran reproduction.

There are two dances: the first is for pollination, and the second is to spread seeds.

The pollination dance features whirling, sharp movements and close crest proximity, and is most similar to the human styles of samba and salsa. They may dance with only one partner or with many, but usually dances are made for pairs or cycling couples.

The second is to shake the seeds from the floran's mane, which is typically among the last of the events. This one shares similarities with the first, but stomping and shaking become more common movements, more similar to this dance.

Florans are most aggressive and territorial around this time, so energetic dances, sports, and wrestling help channel that energy away from fighting and outright violence.

Unlike the rest of the year, florans during this meeting of clans aim to bring in as much prey as possible. They will the meat from the bones and skin the animals, but the vast majority will go to the new seedlings. They pile the kills in the clearing where the seed dance took place to fertilize the young.

Child-rearing is communal, but a floran may pick a child who looks similar to them or their dance partner (a likely offspring) or one who is particularly talented to be their apprentice. Otherwise, a child is free to choose their specialization as they grow older.

Given that florans are plantlike creatures, while other species on their alleged homeplanet are meat-based, I'm thinking they may be the descendants of a fallen spacefaring race at the time when the game takes place. Since their biological makeup is so different from the creatures they interact with, they probably don't get environment-based illnesses often, and don't mind rotting meat since it poses no threat to them beyond possible indigestion.
