PSA TO EVERYONE if you do a home genetic testing kit please assume the entire universe, the government, insurance companies, employers, your mom, cops, your landlord, will be able to gain access to that information until you read their terms that clearly outline what privacy you do have and do informed research to learn what privacy you therefore don’t have. assume anyone with access to that information is legally able to act on it unless you know specifically who can and cannot (for instance, the EEOC prohibits discrimination based on genetic information, but that only applies to employers). SECOND PSA TO EVERYONE recognize that when you give up genetic information about yourself you also give up genetic information about other people. FURTHERMORE, the amount of usable information we can gain from our genetic information is changing all the time, and information they don’t know how to find in it now could be used against you later. the privacy risks with this shit are HUGE and nowhere near adequately dealt with.

I love this interpretation! I noticed that they had similar shoes/poses but hadn't though about reasons for that choice. I do wonder if we'll see more Maia/Liz paralleling (both of their dads are kinda shitty!!) and if this was the start of more.

counter-argument: Liz is a self-possessed queen who takes action and risks and Maia is an infant child who’s done nothing in three years but accept what was handed to her. definitely Liz’s relationship to her father’s harmful behavior clearly isn’t something we’re done with, but I’d be perfectly happy if Maia’s relationship to her father’s harmful behavior was something we were done with. (basically, I’m torn here because I always, always want more Liz, but...at what cost?)

anyway, remember the time Liz offered to be Maia’s mentor just for Maia to be physically present while gay in the homophobia scene and then it was never mentioned again? I wonder whether that still exists. sidenote, sometimes this show is terrible.

over time Alicia’s character development necessitated that TGW become less interested in justice as something more important than law, but it’s probably good that TGF is taking the opposite trajectory, and it makes the two echo each other nicely while still feeling like this isn’t too redundant because we haven’t been here with Diane (@florrickandassociates, care to weigh in?)

When Diane said this I laughed but I had no idea we were supposed to take it seriously for like the whole episode. Maybe if we'd seen some Lucca friendship this season other than teeny bits of work with Maia it wouldn't have been so weird????? That said u kno how I feel about friendship

Imagine going from having Alicia as your best friend to having Maia and Marissa as your maybe actual best friends.

Yeah, I got Maia and Lucca because Maia was just...pushy enough about it, and Lucca seemed amused. (That’s not entirely fair - I was often confused about why Maia was so friendly with Lucca, and we haven’t seen enough of them outside of work this season for me to feel like that’s continued.) I completely get Maia and Marissa because Marissa wants someone who will be entertained by her, and Maia totally bends to her stronger will, and they’re all happy. 

But we haven’t seen a lot of Marissa and Lucca. And that they’d be her best friends, AND such good friends with her that she’d want to see them right after having a baby? I know she’s not necessarily one for making friends and all, but doesn’t she have some peers? Some people together enough to have helped take care of and support her while she was pregnant?

As is often the case, a lot of the problem here is how little we see of Lucca (and how much of that centers around Paul Burger, of course). If we’d watched them being friends? It would probably make sense! If we’d seen them step up and support her? It would probably make sense! But we have so little evidence about who, if anyone, has been occupying space in her life these days. Maybe she just likes Maia and Marissa because they show up without telling her not to do her job.

@florrickandassociates I think “bold” is a word Adrian would use, but I wouldn’t, for what Maia’s problem is. She’s young and informal - I wear shorts (with tights) to my job that doesn’t allow jeans. (No one’s yelled at me yet, so I just...keep wearing them. But that’s normal clothes for me.) But I don’t think it’s an expression of boldness because I don’t think she’s doing something that makes her uncomfortable; she just has a different idea than Old Team about how to behave.

There’s a big difference between that and being able to ask people for their time (I apologize to my boss, who loves me, if I ask her too many questions in a day, even though they’ll make me do my job better), hold people accountable (my work Young Team is so much about supporting each other in this), or assert her own intuition. She’s young, nervous, shy. Adrian doesn’t give a fuck who puts their feet on the couches, probably. He likely doesn’t think much about making your older colleague, if she’s a black woman, do emotional labor for you as a kind of boldness. Adrian only cares how she talks to other people, so I think it’s reasonable for him to define that as boldness.

Maia doesn’t maybe have a way to talk to Lucca about this without being familiar/temporarily pretending she’s also Young Team?
