It is the time of year when the cherry trees impress us with spectacular displays and provide a great food source for pollinators, the Prunus 'Shirotae' (Mount Fuji cherry, ornamental cherry) was buzzing. This wide spreading, deciduous tree has a flat crown with fragrant, pure white, semi-double flowers. There will be fresh green foliage and later this will provide orange and red autumn colour.

At The Grange, Benenden, Kent, the Prunus 'Taihaku' (great white cherry) was flowering. This was the garden and home of Collingwood Ingram, known as ‘Cherry’ Ingram who helped restore this cultivar to Japan where it had become extinct. This story and others are explored in ‘Cherry’ Ingram The Englishman Who Saved Japan’s Blossoms written by Naoko Abe and recently published for an English speaking audience having been successful as a Japanese version.

A small, spring flowering cherry tree, a Prunus cultivar, was brightening this formal landscape on the streets of Cambridge, UK. It had obviously already attracted some admirers who had left a small message! It was great to know others thought it was a beautiful addition to the city.

Flowering Plum or possibly Flowering Cherry (Prunus) is a genus of trees and shrubs, which includes the fruits plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and almonds. Native to the northern temperate regions. These two trees are on the footpath over the road and were well established in 1995 when we arrived. They are pruned back quite hard every year and always make a nice show. They are established trees and exist only on rain water. With all the bee eradication (varona mite) we may need flies to help pollinate. I think these are native, not house flies. #prunus #flower #GloweringPlum #pink #FloweringCherry #abcmygarden #tree #longlived #StreetTree #spring (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch9PH8WPq4c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
