new headcanon of mine that has almost no basis in canon and is just me thinking about how much more attached to/focused on asgore flowery is compared to the other flowers (and this is also just me having fun with the idea of tmasc flowery bc holy hell he clocked ralsei the fucking second they met):
so you know how the seven flowers are supposed to represent the seven souls right. and how it makes sense in the wider context of utdr that there is a golden flower instead of a red one like the the soul colour pattern would make someone assume (since a red flower would complete both the soul colours and the ‘rainbow’) bc we know of ut flowey’s existence right.
what if it *was* meant to be a red flower? in-universe, without a meta context of flowey’s existence and relationship with the other souls, it looks slightly odd to see a bouquet of flowers that looks like it’s supposed to create a rainbow, but doesn’t. and what if a rainbow was exactly the thing that asgore was trying to create with the bouquet, but when he planted the seeds for the flowers, he mixed up the red and gold, or maybe the gold seeds were placed in the wrong packet when being sold, or *something* happened, and in the end what ends up growing isn’t the red flower that asgore intended but a golden one. though, it’s difficult to recognize that in the early stages of a plant’s life, what with there being no flower to realize the mistake from. and so, asgore goes about his life, caring for the flowers to become part of his proposal bouquet, none the wiser to the fact.
and so (this is slightly more self-indulgent) flowery grows under asgore’s care. he listens to asgore, he knows he’s going to be the red to complete the orange-yellow-green-cyan-blue-magenta rainbow for the bouquet. or, at least, he thinks. and he’s starting become a proper flower, starting to bud, and he knows there’s something… off. he knows that his colour doesn’t look right, to be red. too light, not nearly close enough to the hue he *should* be.
and this is… slightly terrifying! because everyone else seems to be coming into their predicted colours. everyone else seems to be growing right and he’s the only one who’s growing *wrong* and asgore has barely noticed. and there’s the dread, of not only being deemed *unworthy* to be part of the bouquet, but also the disappointment that comes with. of knowing someone you care about, who has cared for you so much, put so much time and effort and love into your growth, has certain expectations of you that you cannot achieve, not for a lack of trying, but because you quite literally cannot be who (or in this case, what) they want you to be. and as the time ticks closer to his blooming, the guilt and fear spirals over and over, and at some point asgore starts to *notice* that he doesn’t seem to be red like he should be, and eventually—
he blooms, and like he thought, he isn’t a red flower. he’s… gold. a golden flower, instead of the red he should be. first comes the denial, that maybe he’ll grow into the colour, somehow, that maybe he’s like one of those flowers that begin a certain colour but bloom into a different one over time. then comes the anger, that he should be gold and not red, that he was created and born the wrong colour in the first place. afterwards, the bargaining with fate, the desperation for things to be right, that if he has to be wrong then at least he could spare asgore the disappointment of growing the wrong flower somehow, engineer an accident so that he has to try again? quickly comes the self-loathing, the kind of guilt that comes from knowing that as you are, you will never be *right*, unable to fulfill the only expectation held by the person who so carefully watched your growth, talked to you about his days and highs and lows and how excited and nervous and excited he was to propose to tori, all because you were, and have always been, the wrong colour for the bouquet. and finally, not acceptance, but the resignation to fate, to knowing that no matter what, you’re going to be disappointing. you’re not red, you’re golden, and there is nothing you can do about that anymore, no matter how much you wish you could do anything, anything to make him happy, to repay him for the love and care he’s given you, to convince him not to throw you away (even though it’s kinda awful that you’re thinking that about him, because you *know* he’s not that kind of person, but you feel like it’d hurt less if he did, instead of leaving you to the side and letting you watch as he grows another flower, this time the *right* colour instead of your stupid gold). and then the time comes when he finally sees you bloom and he…
isn’t mad. or furious. or even that disappointed, really. he… talks about how he’s not going to throw you away, talking *to* you like he could understand your heart, even if you’re just a flower. he talks about how even though he wanted red, he’s pleasantly surprised with you and your colour, and how well you’ve grown, and how even though you’re not the colour he was expecting, he’s still going to include you in the bouquet anyway. that you being gold adds a bit of charm to it, even, and that he’s so, so excited to see how you all turn out together, and that he hopes she says yes.
and suddenly, you feel stupid for worrying so much. you feel guilty for having those kinds of thoughts about him in the first place, but more powerful than that is the *relief* of it all, of not being red mattering so little in the grand scheme of it all, and the sheer *gratefulness* in your flower heart that this is the man that planted and grew you, this wonderful man who looks at your golden petals and doesn’t see disappointment and wasted time, but beauty and new opportunity. so in that flower heart, someone who would later be flowery resolved to do everything in his power to care for him in return, to one day be able to take the edges off asgore’s burdens and inspire even a fraction of the happiness that he’s been given.
(this is a feeling that only grows with time, grows until it’s the moment of truth as asgore bundles them up as a bouquet, offers them to toriel, becomes true as she says yes and his purpose is finally served, somehow grows larger and larger within his flower heart when asgore decides to replant them and keep them alive with warmth and care and love, keeps growing the longer they live and listen to asgore’s tales and watch the family bloom with one child, then two, and then grows desperate as *something* happens, and suddenly the whole family is breaking apart, and asgore whispers secrets and theories and confessions and apologies and guilt to the flowers’ patient ears, and years later, when the only things he and the others ever see anymore is asgore and the result of years upon years of desperation and bad decisions, an opportunity comes in the form of a dark fountain, formed by the hands of someone flowery no longer sees, but hears so very, very much of. come hell or high water, no way is he squandering the chance to repay everything asgore’s done for him. and if it so happens that he sees a little bit of himself in a certain princess desperately trying to play prince in spite of their true self, then that’s nobody else’s business. of course he’ll give em a hand, though he feels like this’ll take a bit of tough love to get the message through. no matter. he’ll repay everything he can, and if it means being a little mean to get ralsei to be a little more okay to be their most honest self, then it’s worth it. (he’d know the feeling, after all.))
okay so that got a bit out of hand. but yeagh do you SEE the VISION
OHHH... OH MY GOD... GUYS THIS IS PEAK WE'VE HIT IT. YES. YES A MILLION TIMES YES- I LOVE THIS SO MUCH??
