Perseverance when booking award travel

So in an earlier post, I mentioned I had booked my first round trip award travel on business class.  The only problem was that by the time I accrued enough miles to actually book the flights, the return date I was hoping for was unavailable and I had to book my wife and I on separate flights.  Well a few days ago, as I went through my routine of searching for available seats on Cathay, wouldn’t you know that there was an available award seat in J class (business class) on the same flight I had booked for myself.  

I immediately called in to British Airways to change my wife’s flight but the rep wasn’t seeing the availability.  Huh? I pleaded that on my end (my screen was showing that the itinerary was available and the only reason why I couldn’t book the award seat was because of lack of points.  His suggestion was to cancel the current booking because the points would immediately be redeposited to my account and I would be able to book that IF indeed it was available.  At this point, I thought about it for a few seconds because my hesitation was what if this was a phantom seat that I was seeing and when I tried to book it, I get an error message.  That would’ve been heartbreaking!  For some reason, I went ahead and assumed the risk.  So I told Jack (I think that was the rep’s name) to go ahead with the cancellation and he processed it rather quickly.  I kept refreshing my BA Avios account page and within a few minutes, all 132,000 points did show up.  Quickly, I booked that award seat and when that confirmation email came through, I’m telling you a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders! Finally, my wife, who was constantly reminding me to get us on the same return flight for the past several months, can rest assured that she wasn’t going to have to fly solo with our wild toddler on a 15 hour flight!

I breathed a sigh of relief and informed her the great news.  All the times she would ask if I had rebooked her return flight, I kept saying “Don’t worry, we just have to wait for a seat to open up” when in the back of my mind, I was wondering if it actually ever would happen.  

Well folks, the moral of the story here is that perseverance is key when booking premium award seats; especially during peak holiday travel periods.  In hindsight, I should’ve done a ton of more research and planning to have enough points and miles before booking these flights.  Since I had little flexibility on dates and we were traveling in the Christmas/New Years time frame, I put myself in a disadvantaged situation where I was forced to book flights on dates that were less than ideal.  In the end, it all worked out because I stuck with the plan and kept checking daily for award seats to open up.  This is gonna be a great trip and I’m excited to be traveling to visit my in-laws in SE Asia for Christmas and New Years.  The icing on the cake is that we get to travel in a premium class cabin on one of the best serviced airlines in the industry.
