This is why I said black women are the most disrespected in the world • Posted @withregram • @hihdomesticemployers It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of a beloved member of the Hand in Hand community. Engracia Figueroa, a fierce advocate for people with disabilities, passed away last Sunday due to complications from injuries she sustained when United Airlines destroyed her custom wheelchair last July while traveling back from the #CareCantWait mobilization in DC where she testified in support of #BuildBackBetter. Thanks to everyone in our community who has already been circulating our statement over the last couple of days. Link to the statement in bio. Hand in Hand is talking with our community and allies about next steps. We will share more information soon. #FlyingWhileDisabled #Disability #Ableism #DisabilityJustice #JusticeForEngracia @caringacrossgen @domesticworkers @allwheelsupinc @senduckworth (at Instagram.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRR3pNpc1y/?utm_medium=tumblr
Posted @withregram • @andraealavant Absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating and this CANNOT go unaddressed! Engracia's story could so easily be mine. My wheelchair has been demolished by airlines more times than I'd like to remember. “Mobility devices are an extension of our bodies. When they are damaged or destroyed, we become re-disabled. Until the airlines learn how to treat our devices with the care and respect they deserve, flying remains inaccessible.” - Engracia Figueroa Engracia Figueroa, an Afro-Latina disabled woman, died on October 31, 2021 as a result of injuries sustained after United Airlines mangled her $30,000 customized wheelchair during a July 2021 flight. Her death is inexcusable. #disability and #accesibility are always difficult. Accessibility at airports is even more challenging. If you are a #disabledparent and/or have a #disabled child and need assistance it may take you over a week, 6 phone calls, and a text convo with the airline plus a cascade of tweets to TSA, the airline, the airport and a disability service support organization (which was actually the most useless) before you are sure you can go through security alone with 4 kids without catastrophe. I'm still not convinced we'll be supported by all we meet, but remarkably TSA CARES was amazingly supportive and helpful. Hopefully their staff at terminal will be as eager to assist. "Heartland helps" was a joke and even told me they "don't help parents traveling with kids" disabled or not, it seems. KLM wasn't much better. They just asked me what kind of wheelchair I was bringing. 🙄🙄🙄 and told me they couldn't help in any other way. Including not helping me sit by my kids. 😬 #hopingforamiracle #ableism #disabledparent #norestforthewicked #leavingonajetplane #fibrowarrior #spoonielife #ableismawareness #disabilityawareness #flyingwhiledisabled #feministselfie #momlife
