You don't have to like me for writing this but it's the #truth. #Ableism is a big problem, always has been, but is so much more visible right now. As a #disabledperson, I am not okay with how #disabledpeople are treated. #ableismawareness #disabled #disabilityawareness #disabilityadvocate #invisibleillnesses #invisibleillness #chronicillness #chronicillnesses #lyme #lymedisease #babesia #bartonella #cfs #cps #chronicillnessawareness #covid #covid19 #disabilityinclusion #pandemicrelief #ableismistrash #disabilityrights #disabledrights #invisibleillnessawareness #invisibleillnesswarrior (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMfvX3EhCAl/?igshid=154arq0hmwa8r
If you wouldn’t do something to an able-bodied child, do not do it to your disabled children. Another one that comes to mind, “I’m inclusive, but I have to be honest. If they’re being really distracting, it isn’t fair to the other kids to share their classroom”. <—- ABLEIST AF! . . . . . #actuallyautistic #actuallyunmasking #ableism #ableismistrash #ableismawareness #unlearningneurotypical #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC_DLBShMhk/?igshid=1i8kc61ufd82v
I'm just gonna say it: this is ableist. When you share things like this, you're sending a message to your friends who are struggling that their friendship is inadequate. This may be a fine measurement for able-bodied people, or those without mental illness, but for those of us dealing in Spoons* everyday, this kinda thing is actually pretty hurtful. It sends a message, intended or not, that I and people like me are bad friends because we don't have the physical/emotional strength to keep in touch or hang out regularly. One of the worst things you lose when you develop a chronic and/or mental illness is your social life as friends become frustrated with your limitations and leave you. The reality is most people won't wait around if you have to keep cancelling due to illness - they say they will, but most people get fed up and move on with their lives. Even if the reason their friend is flaking out is due to health problems outside their friend's control. So... If that's not what you mean, please don't share things like this. We see your posts, and most of us won't say anything because confrontations aren't worth the symptom flares they bring on... But we see what you post, and it hurts even if you tell us "oh but I didn't mean YOU." 😥 . . Unfortunately #ableism is still very much alive all over. This was just a snapshot on @twitter of one day. Go checkout the hashtag. #ableism #ableismawareness
What is Ableism? Ableism is a cultural disorder that can affect people's language and communication skills, social relationships, and other interpersonal behaviors. Symptoms may include: * Deficits in respectful, disability-inclusive communicate skills; may include the repetitive use of language that discriminates against or excludes disabled people, and failure to provide communication access to disabled people. * Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity with disabled people, ranging (for example) from lack of empathy toward disabled people to failure to include disabled people in social activities; in severe forms, may include abuse, homicide/filicide, and/or total apathy toward the abuse of disabled people. * Restricted patterns of discriminatory behavior, for example: insistence on segregating, mocking, and/or abusing disabled people; unusual interest in "inspiration pornography" that objectifies and demeans disabled people, etc. Sidebar image of lightbulb and text: Ableism is any form of discrimination or negative bias toward disabled people or disability in general. #ableismawareness #autismawareness #autismacceptance #toneitdowntaupe #allismawareness #neurodiversity
