It was 109 degrees today and is only now below 80, a bit too warm for the firepit so I'm sitting by the glow of my new Haunted Mansion Stretching Portrait lantern from Spirit Halloween while I smoke a Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta cigar and sip a Heaven's Door cask strength single barrel bourbon picked for Total Wine. Coming in at 118.5 proof, this NAS Tennessee Whiskey has a 70% corn, 22% Rye, and 8% Barley mash bill. The whiskey has notes of biscuits, brown butter, some minty rye, and a nice lingering finish. .... Putting some smoke in the air tonight in remembrance of the crew of CG-6505 lost this day, September 4, 2008, with all hands just off the coast of Oahu. The four aircrew, Capt. Thomas Nelson, Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Wischmeier, Petty Officer First Class David Skimin, and Petty Officer First Class Joshua Nichols were conducting hoist training with a Station Honolulu boat crew when the hoist cable snagged on the boat causing the cable to part and forcung the aircraft to enter an unusual attitude recovery. This extreme yaw damaged the rotor system and caused additional damage when the rotor blades struck the hoist boom. The aircrew attempted to make it to shore safely while issuing "mayday" calls but only made it two miles before the aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean five miles from shore. .... It's nice to be home again. Heatwave hitting Southern California but this evening is beautiful, much like the weather I left in Hawaii so I'm sipping a bottle that came homenwith me from there. This is the R Field Wine Company Maker's Mark Private Selection Loretto 2022. This bottle gives me lots of cola flavors to start that merge into tobacco and oranges. Very interesting. Paired with a classic My Father Flor de las Antillas cigar. ..... This week marks the 17th anniversary of the greatest sustained rescue operation in Coast Guard history. After Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast of the U.S. Coast Guard aircrews launched into the rain and wind not knowing what they would face over the coming days. The first recorded rescue during the storm happened at 2:50 pm on August 29, 2005 by a helicopter crew launched from Mobile, AL. In the end more than 33,500 were rescued by air and boat. The 5,600 Coast Guard personnel deployed faced challenges they had never imagined but they exemplified the service's "Bias for Action" and improvised on the fly to solve the problems they saw one at a time. Ay one point crews were rescuing 750 people by boat and 100 people by air per hour. Do you like Jack Daniel's? This takes their normal flavors up to 11. Lots of spice and caramel notes. Paired with a Ramon Allons from AJ Fernandez. ... This two part episode was so much fun to film and the crew at Air Station Barbers Point and my 14th Coast Guard District ninjas really knocked it out of the park on this including an amazing opportunity for one of the show's camera crews to fly in the back of a C-130 with the rear ramp down to film our hero plane in flight over the Hawaiian Islands. Trying the Not a King Rye from Journeyman Distillery paired with a Limited Cigar Association Fruit Leather care of the Skallywag Cigars crew. For the cigar I get an earthy and black pepper flavor. The whiskey is interesting bringing a sweet flavor up front, followed by some oak, and fruit notes. A good whiskey to crack open on the F-rye-day of 4th of July weekend. Sacrifice Remembered by David Schwind is a look at posthumous awards of the Purple Heart in World War Two. The beautiful, detailed photos of the awards and their engraving ties to individual stories brings home the true meaning of the Purple Heart. Each service is represented and it is amazing to see the medals presented to Lt "Jimmy" Crotty, USCG and SM1 Douglas Munro in such detail. ........... Tonight's toast goes out to a group of true heroes the aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay who were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for their rescue of two injured firefighters from the Middle Fire, September 6, 2019. The crew conducted multiple hoists at maximum height, 10 yards from an active fire line that surrounded the hoist zone on three sides. Here's to you guys, especially you Graham. ...........
