Is it just because I live in Hawaii that this song feels a little problematic? Or is "Aloha ʻOe" too universal now to be considered sacred? I really don’t know. White men stealing Liliʻuokalani’s entire kingdom is infinitely worse than Korean people stealing part of her song -- but is that the comparison Cherry Bullet wants everyone to make? Because that’s where my mind goes.

(In a vacuum, I like Cherry Bullet’s song a lot. I even like how they use the original melody in the chorus. But a song about saying goodbye, written by a queen who was forced at gunpoint to hand her kingdom over to outsiders, feels like an odd choice to inspire a summer bop.)
