Word count: 643

Impatiently Patrick’s fingers drummed against the steering wheel of his car. Why was he stuck in this goddamn traffic jam now, now of all possible times? He would barely have minded if it had happened on a Monday morning on his way to the studio or a band meeting. He would have turned up the radio, and leant back, patiently waiting for the traffic to inch forwards.

But now?

All he wanted to do was get home as quickly as possible. He had not seen you in almost a month. Of course he was used to not seeing you for longer amounts of time. Whenever he was on tour it was no rare occurrence to not see you in person for two or three months. But it always took a toll on him when it was close to Christmas.

Your work had kept you away from home for almost three weeks, and the day before you came back, Patrick had gotten an emergency call from Pete, asking him to cross half of the US to come meet him. The emergency had not been anything worrisome, yet still even Patrick recognised his presence was needed, and so the long awaited reunion with you had dragged out for another week.

The aching in his chest reminded him of all the years he did not have a partner he could look forward to seeing. Especially around Christmas the longing not to be alone had always gotten worse for him. He had felt lonely, his heart tucking him painfully into an unknown direction, and yet he had not found you until just a few years ago.

Now the tucking in his heart knew its destination.

The feeling of missing you now was similar to that of back then, when he had not even known yet who he was missing. Patrick was not sure which one was more painful. Back then it had been the fear of never finding the person who loved him with the same dedication as he loved them, the uncertainty of perhaps being alone his whole life. It had been the lack of warmth, of a home in an emotional sense. And now it was the pain of being separated from all that.

Patrick tried staying focused on the traffic, not letting his mind get distracted by the thoughts of your soft skin, your warm embrace, you gentle smile. He could not let himself be distracted now. In the end he would cause a car crash, and then it would take him even longer to get home to you. He pushed the thought of running his hands over your hair aside, and focused back on the street. Luckily the cars in front of him finally started moving, and just a few minutes later he turned around the last corner.

Parking the car in the driveway, he quickly jumped out, not even caring to grab his bag before dashing over to the house. He was so excited, that he almost dropped the keys as he tried to unlock the door. Inside the smell of cinnamon and vanilla hit his nose, and even before he had crossed the hallway, looking for you, who seemed to be baking in the kitchen (judging by the smell), you had poked your head around the corner. Immediately you came jumping towards him, wrapping him in a hug, which he quickly returned. Pressing his nose into your hair, he deeply inhaled the familiar scent.

“I’m glad you’re home,” you whispered, before pulling away just enough to press your lips against his.

Patrick wanted to tell you how much he had missed you, how grateful he was to have a home to come back to, to come back to you. But he decided there was enough time for that later. Right now all he wanted was to keep kissing and holding you.

Finally she stops, takes a deep breath and looks down at the test.

Andy’s apartment, early the next day.

“Am I a stalker if I call her again?” He wonders out loud.“How many times have you called her?” His friend asks.“Once to twice a day for the last month”“Does she ever answer?” “Nope, not once” Andy says“Yeah that usually means she doesn’t want to talk” he says with a laugh.“Yeah you’re probably right.” Andy agrees solemnly, “but I’ll try just one more time”His friend laughs but he takes out his phone anyway, calling (y/n). To his surprise, she answers in the third ring.

“Andy, I’m glad you called” She says sounding worn out, “Y-you are? That’s greats (y/n) I’ve been trying to talk to you for weeks” “ I know Andy but I didn’t want to talk” she says “ you made me hide in the dark Because you couldn’t bear the thought of Joe knowing about us” “I know (y/n), I let you down and I know that was wrong I wanna just-“

“Listen it doesn’t matter right now. Are you free tonight? We need to talk” “Free, yes yes I am of course! Do you wanna come over at 6?”

“Sure, ill see ya then Andy” she said, and then hung up. Andy closed the phone grinning, “ I’m seeing her tonight” “I’m impressed man, didn’t expect that” his friend responded.

“Yeah, me neither”

Later that night

“Hey (y/n) how are you?” Andy says, pulling open the door right after she knocks.

“I’m okay” she says with a small smile

“Listen I know we left off on a really bad foot but I’m really glad you came over tonight I’ve been wanting to talk to you every day since”

“Andy I-“ (y/n) sighs and rubs her temples, “I’m here Becuase I need to tell you something”

“Okay let me go first” Andy says.

“No I-“ she tries to interrupt.

“Please just listen” Andy begs,

“Okay” she says, sitting on the couch. Andy follows her and takes a deep breath before beginning to talk. “(Y/N) I know that I mistreated you. I treated you like some random one night stand that I didn’t want joe to know about Becuase I was embarrassed, but that’s not it. You’re more than that- we should be more than that. I was trying to be respectful of Joe because he’s my friend but (y/n), the truth is is that I’m in love with you. And I have been for years”

“You- you are?” (Y/n) says in disbelief.

“Yes yes I am, so so much and I tried to hide it but the truth is, I don’t care what Joe thinks. I love you and I want you with me, forever”

This was your first job after graduating from high school.

Actually, this was your first job ever, and you were surprised you even got the job from how short and basic your resume was. But it was probably because they didn’t have very many employees in the first place.

Working at a bookstore wasn’t— so bad I mean the customers were pretty nice and your co-workers as well. And the bonus was that you really liked books and you got a discount for them!!

Though you didn’t really talk to your co-workers often, especially because most of them were significantly older than you.

So you mostly stayed in your car during break until it was over, or went over to get your favorite slurpee or sometimes Pete would drag you about and talk about the girls he recently banged— gross… or just random shit while you drink your slurpee.

There was a music store right across from where you worked.

The bright colored walls and bright lights screamed for you never to go in there yourself. Sometimes their music would leak from their store into where you worked as well. Which was really annoying when you needed to organize the new books

But there was a boy who kept staring at you through the glass.

He had light brown hair that stopped near his shoulders, curled at the ends ever so slightly. His blueish greenish eyes that you couldn’t really see from afar and his thick black rimmed glasses concealed his eyes from afar. He had jeans on paired with Converse and a green polo that was a part of his uniform and a name tag you couldn’t see from far away.

You didn’t really dare to go in that store, not because it was loud— well maybe that’s part of it but it was also because you were honestly too nervous to go.

Partially because of the light browned hair guy, sometimes, he’d catch you staring at him from the glass window, which made you all flushed and embarrassed. Almost every night you remember the times he catches you looking at him, making you stay up practically all night because of it.

Even if you tried to forget and erased it from your memory, somehow your brain jogs the memory all over again.

How embarrassing— you thought to yourself, you’ve always been somewhat socially awkward and not really great with social cues.

Maybe that’s why you didn’t really get along with people as much as you did with books.

You were always immersed in books even as a kid— you weren’t well… really interested in toys. In fact, your parents mostly bought you books for Christmas or even your birthday which was more exciting than getting a toy for you where most kids would be throwing a tantrum and crying about getting a book on their special day.

Though you don’t have the best relationship with your parents now, especially given how much they’re pressuring you about your own future and how you should get a higher education since you did pretty well in high school. You still… appreciated them? They were just a lot sometimes.

Organizing books has become a habit now for you when you get into the rhythm of it at least.

At first, you were all a mess trying to get the ropes of the job, but now you can kind of space out in your mind while organizing the books into alphabetical order and by genre without having to really think about it.

But the downside was that you had a hard time having conversations with the customer.

Normally the conversations were quick and straightforward— pretty easy if you say so yourself but if the customer started yelling you would just stand there awkwardly, mumbling a few times to correct them which got them even more mad until your manager noticed how stressed you were and took over for you. Which you were thankful for, thank you Sam

“Hey Y/N!!” A familiar voice said behind you, making you jump from the sudden noise.

You knew that voice from anywhere.

Turning around you saw… Pete!

Your best friend since probably mid year of your freshman year of high school?

Pete worked at the music place across from the bookstore where you work. Sometimes during his break, he would enter the store just to bother you and irritate you like he always did. He loved rage baiting you and teasing you. That's just how he showed his love! After confirming he pissed you off he could dip and didn’t even bother to buy anything, except just to waste your precious time while working which sometimes got you in trouble because of him.

You sighed, relaxing your shoulders

“What do you think I’m doing Pete? I’m working… like you should be?” Pete gasped dramatically, slamming his hand against his chest like he got hurt.

He turned his head the other way huffing, “Well too bad for you Y/N, I’m on break.”

Great… now you have to deal with him on top of actually doing your job, unless you took your break now. Which sounded nice— plus Pete would’ve probably forced you to until your ears fell off anyway.

You walked over to where your manager stood, the cash register of hell.

“Hey Stacy, I’m gonna go take my break.”

Stacy whipped her head towards you and nodded, “Alright just make sure to come back in time.”

You nodded in return and turned to where Pete stood nonchalantly looking at you.

Signaling him to go out of the bookstore which he happily obliged.

…

“Dude— I don’t understand why you worked at that sad bookstore, why didn’t you work in the music store… Y’know, I’ve banged with the manager a few times I could get you a job there if you want—”

Your pointer finger immediately went up in his face, and he retracted his face away a bit in surprise.

“First of all I don’t want to know how you banged your own manager to keep your job. Secondly y’know I don’t like music that much.”

He huffed and rolled his eyes.

How could you not like music? You could never pinpoint why you didn’t like music, you kind of just connected with books more rather than music

Pete yawned slouching on the bench

“I’m bored— I’m gonna go get some of those salty pretzels on the 2nd floor. Do you want anything?”

You shook your head, you weren’t really in the mood to digest food at the moment.

It had been a few minutes longer than he normally took. He's probably flirting with the cashier so he can bang her or get his pretzels for free.

Something of the sort.

Finally, after a couple more minutes that quite literally felt like years, Pete came back with someone—

You couldn’t really see their faces from how far away they were. All you could really see was their light brown hair, a black band tee and pair of jeans, and glasses walking up to you…

Then it hit you.

It was that guy that kept staring at you and you kept staring at him from the music store— great the only day where you didn’t bother to look good you actually met him for the first time. Thanks a lot, Pete!!

“Hey Y/N! Have you met Trick before? He works with me.”

Pete smiled maliciously, slinging his arm around the tensed and nervous Patrick

“It’s Patrick.” Patrick corrected Pete which made him laugh and pat Patrick back.

He smiled nervously, his heart beating increasingly from how nervous he was. After a long awkward silence, you finally spoke up, “It’s nice to meet you Patrick, I’m Y/N.”

Before Patrick could reply to you, Pete groaned as he checked his watch.

“Shit— Y/N we gotta go, our break is over.” You sighed getting up as Pete popped the salty small pretzel bites into his mouth.

“It was nice to meet you Trick, I hope I get to see you soon.” Quickly waving to him you followed Pete who had already left.

He was about to open his mouth to correct you but he realized that he honestly didn’t mind how that nickname he wholeheartedly hated rolled off your tongue. It was pleasant?

Be Careful of What You Be-Friend

He’s been my bet friend since middle school and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. He offered to take me to this fancy sandwich place, and it was great. He even payed for the meal.

“Anything for my queen. How are you and Joe?”

“They could be better.” It’s the truth. He hasn’t been himself lately. H thinks I’m spending too much time with James. He thinks James likes me, and I like him. Which could be farther from the truth. 

“I’m sorry. I feel like it’s my fault. I can’t help being your best friend!” He laughs. I smile, he really can’t. I don’t bond well with people. We sit there talking for the next 2 hours, until Joe comes home, and demands I come home.

*JOE’S POV*

I’ve been waiting for about 30 minutes now. She’s always doing this. Hanging out with that James guy. Everyday, it’s James this, James that. I’m getting tired of it. Everyday he whisks her away to somewhere new. What if she gets tired of the same old with me and what’s something new with James? 

“Hey! I’m home. We were going to a party!” She comes through the door, Lucifer runs to her and she drops to pet him.

“Where you going to let me know? You run off everyday with James! Don’t you (threaten me with a good time) think I want to be with you the way he is?”

“Yes, but you always have something on your plate, I don’t want to get in the way of your music.” She walks calmly to the kitchen. I don’t think she sees how mad I am.

“Don’t turn this on me! You’re the one running off everyday! I have a job!”

“No one said anything about that. You’re just really busy lately and I get lonely. Sorry if I don’t want to be cooped  here all day. I’m not a fish.”

“Goddammit!” I slam my hand on the counter, it makes her look at me, she’s scared, Lucifer has ran off. “Don’t you know what goes through my head?! You don’t see it do you! He likes you! He loves you! He knows you’re tired of the same old same old, so he gives you something new everyday. One day you’ll let it slip that you want a whole new person, which I know you do, and he’ll give it to you! You’ll end up with him and not me!” 

“Fuck Joe! I can’t even have one fucking thing can I?! I couldn’t even get a cat because you don’t want to hurt Lucifer! I could’t have a fish because there to ‘smelly’. Now I can’t have a fucking best friend because of your insecurities!” Stupid examples but, she has a point.

“You don’t under-fucking-stand! He wants to fuck you! Don’t you see it! He takes you away from me until eventually you’ll just run to him!”

“Maybe I will. Maybe I don’t like fighting with you over something as fucking dumb as this!” She puts the orange juice back and walks to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To the only person who doesn’t yell at me for stupid shit!”

“Oh fuck you! If you listened to me you’d understand!” On the list of things not to say to your girlfriend when your relationship is on the fringe, is ‘fuck you’.

“I hate you! Fuck you!” She leaves crying, slamming the door. I stand there, looking and recollecting what just happened. 

*NORMAL POV*

I leave. I drive to James’. Doesn't he understand? He is my only friend. I can’t bond well with other people. I hate him, I can’t have anything. I pull into James’ drive way. I rush to the door and swing it open. He’s sitting on the couch watching Sirens. (LOVE IT) 

“Hey, normal people knock you know.” He says pausing the TV.

“I hate him. I hate my boyfriend. I hate his band. I hate his friends. I hate his ability to make friends.” I slump next to him on the couch.

“Hate is a strong word my love.” He only a blanket covering his lower half. 

“I don’t give a fuck, I hate him. I only like his dog.”

“Oh, we’re saying fuck now.” He’s scooted closer to me, he put his arm around my shoulder.   

“The perfect word for a shitty boyfriend.” I sigh. My mind somewhere else. I stare at the TV. The episode was just starting, it has the theme song on hold. I feel something I haven’t felt in a while, neck kissing. James is sucking on my neck, his hands roaming around my sides, coming in between my thighs.

“Ha very funny.” I try to push him away, but his grip is tighter.He moves me so he’s on top. “Please James, this isn’t funny anymore.” My hands try to push him way, he’s pinned them up with one hand and the other is going under my shirt. “Please stop.”

“I know you’re lonely. You said it yourself today. Let me make up for lost time. He starts sucking on my neck, I let out a moan, it escapes. It’s a reflex.

“I know you’d like this.” I feel him grinding against me, he’s hard I can tell. I wiggle out of his grip. He makes my hands go in his boxers, touching him.

“Please stop! I don’t want this!” I try and move, but he’s on me, his grip has gotten tighter. I feel sick, this doesn’t feel right. He removes my hands and the blanket. 

“These jeans must go my love.” He unbuckles them, I move out of his grip and fall on the floor. I try and run but he catches me. I’m on the floor next to the door. “Oh no, I let you get out of my grip and look what happened.” He pushes my shirt up and rubs my breasts through the bra, I start to cry, I try and push his hands away with mine, he puts them behind my back, making me sit on them.

“Oh baby don’t cry, we’re just getting started.” I scream but he shoves his fingers in my mouth. Now my crying has gotten harder.

*JOE’S POV*

I feel it. I feel something. I tried calling, texting. Something is wrong. Whenever she walked out she would come back, cry in my arms and we’d talk. It’s been an hour. I get anxious, I get my keys and drive to James’ house. I know where he lives since I’ve had to pick her up when he threw parties. Lucky me, I was right. I park like a crazy man and run to the door, I stop. I hear something my nightmares thought of.

Her moaning and him groaning.

But it sounds off. Like something is in her mouth. Oh fuck no. I push the door open and see him shoving his fingers in her mouth, while he has his other fingers in her.

“Help!” She chokes out. He moves away from her as she fixes herself and runs, probably to my car. I get angry, I grab him by the neck and slam him against the wall.

“Relax, the tears were from pleasure, more then you could give.” He has the nerve to smack off.  I punch him in the face, he get’s a black eye, I punch his stomach, making his breath labored and him in pain.

“Joe please! We need to go!” She grabs me, he drops to the floor, his mouth is bleeding. I realize, I have no self control. We run back to the car. I drive as fast as I can to get away from this. 

“Are you ok? Do we need to go to the hospital? Do you need anything?” I ask as we’re driving, her crying has stopped a little.

“No, I’m fine. I just want to burn theses clothes, bathe, and go to bed in your arms. I’m so sorry Joe. I should’ve listened. I love you and I’m sorry.” She’s crying again.

“No, you have nothing to apologize for. I let myself get in the way of you, I’m sorry. I never should’ve said those things, baby please.” I feel myself starting to cry, I park normally this time. I get out of the car, pick her up, carry her to the bedroom, lay her down. She curls up in the blanket. I go and get her bath ready, warm and bubbles.

“You’re bath is ready.” She gets up, kisses me and goes into the bathroom. Once she’s done, she comes out, smelling like her lotion and crawls under the covers with me.

“I love you Joe.”

"Hey bug." Patrick says as he lays down next to me, I've just been reading pregnancy books, freaking out over our new family member.

"Hey, did you know right now that baby is the size of an Avocado?"

"An avocado huh? That's a cool nickname for our undeveloped fetus."

"Well, until it gets bigger, then we'll compare it to other foods, although I hope we'll pick a new name." I say flipping through the book.

"Yes, a girl or a boy, or both." He looks up at me and smiles, showing all teeth.

"Yes Patrick the chances of us having a transgender kid or a gay kid even are steady."

"You sound like Claire from Jurassic World when her and Mr. Missroni are discussing costs right before they see the bird."

"I knew letting you see that with 2 times with Pete was a bad idea."

"I liked it. What else does that book say to do for Avocado?" He says sitting up putting his arm around me.

"Well, it says babies or in this case our Avocado should get used to the parent's voices. I've been talking to Avocado all day."

"Oh yes pumpkin? About what?" He sits up straighter so I can lie down on his side, I kick my shoes off and he starts to play with my hair.

"I shall sing to Avocado. Wait right here!" He gets up and runs to his little office area I hear him pushing around papers, I lean back. I wonder what FOB gem he'll sing this time.

"I got it! It was one a remix album, America's Suithearts I think. I didn't have time to get my guitar though."

"It's fine Patrick, Avocado appreciates it anyhow." He smiles and pushes his ear on my belly, not to hard though.

"Honey is for bees silly bear, Besides there's jelly beans everywhere. It's not what it seems in the land of dreams. Don't worry you head, just go to sleep

It doesn't matter how you feel, Life is a Ferris wheel It's always up and down Don't make a sound."

All the while, I took off Patrick's Fedora and was playing with his hair, by the end of the song, he'd dozed off. Lying there on my belly, singing to Avocado.

"Patrick, are you still up?"

"Yes, I just I wrote this on a napkin. Pete had it for Bronx and I only caught like the two first verses. I don't remember how it went." He sits up and rubs his eyes.

"I'll hold you to that, but first hold me, Trick. I'm tired."
