My Gear and Your Gown- The downfall of Itt and Pure’s selfless plans

This episode of My gear and your gown ended in a painful way. Both Pai and Folk are left broken and hurt by their potential love interests, and it seems like lines have been crossed and there’s no way to go back. Except surprise we get a plot twist their love interests didn’t mean to hurt them, they are just victims of misunderstandings and miscommunications. And this is what causes their downfall, because despite their goals they ended up hurting  the people they love and end up being seen as the opposite of what they really are. We end up  feeling frustrated at the on the surface actions of our characters but remember My gear and your gown is more deeper than that, there are clues hidden telling you what’s real and what’s not so you infer what’s happening. Let me explain even more further

Itt and Pai- The miscommunication

Pure and Itt from My gear and your gown they both like to be secretive and discrete to help the people they care about. In this case in order to repay Pai for all he did for him Itt secretly became Mr 950 and made goals to get Pai to come out of his shell. From the start he was being selfless with this ;he decided to do so thinking Pai hated him, but he was happy to keep pretending to tease Pai to help him be more outgoing and confident if it helped him. The only thing Itt forgot was that he didn’t apologise to Pai at all in the past and Pai had gone on to hold a certain type of resentment for him. Pai may be smart when it comes to books but he wasn’t like that when it comes to people (he doesn’t even believe in love anymore and has low confidence), he couldn’t read between the lines he couldn’t see what Itt was trying to do. He thought in his head; Itt hated him and plus his unrequited love for Itt would never be met because Itt was straight. Itt messed up by not apologising or making it easier for Pai to see he didn’t even care about their fight anymore. He didn’t know how to apologise and so resorted to helping Pai in secret and keeping the façade that he likes playing games with him. Itt also didn’t realise Pai reciprocated his feelings,  he thought Pai hated him and wanted nothing to do with him after Highschool because as episode 7 showed both are bad at communicating with each other. Both thought the other didn’t like them because they were straight when in reality they’ve been pining for each other since high school. Ironic right? It’s a requited but they don’t know it trope. Itts downfall is his lack of ability to communicate properly and his hesitancy towards rejection. That’s what prevented him all this time to go to Pai.

Pure and Folk- The reputation

For Pure it’s different. Pure has a reputation as a playboy. For so long he’s not been able to trust love despite actually waiting for the right person to show up again. His ex abused him and used him to the point of him shutting off his feelings but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t realise when he’s found the right person. The only thing is Pure is a great friend. He has secretly known Itt was chasing after Pai and he cockblocked Folk from getting near him but ended up falling for him. Second remember that Waan asked Pure to help him flirt and get girls? Well Waan isn’t really not obvious, in fact it’s so easy to see how he reacts around Bow that even Pure has figured out his feelings. 

In order to help Waan get the girl, Pure decides to also help him get his confidence (like Itt with Pai) but instead of teasing him he makes him jealous. He uses his reputation and play boy persona to help Waan. He decides to act interested in Bow whilst using all the time he’s near her to talk about Waan (see the basketball scene for example in episode 10) . The truth is he doesn’t want anyone else but Folk. That’s why he lets Folk peruse his phone, he easily rejects everyone for Folk and he hid his conversation with Waan (the one where he said he was using him till he gets tired) from Folk so it doesn’t break what they have. Like Itt Pure has to keep a façade utilising his reputation with Waan, he can’t make Waan jealous if he doesn’t act like his playboy self (if he admits right then Folk is for him then Waan will keep panicking and being weird near Bow) so instead he lies and texts Waan that he’s still into Bow and he’s still being his playboy persona. We know this isn’t true Pure wants no one else but Folk. You know he’s not into Bow because Waan waits after class near Bow waiting for him to use the opportunity to ask her out but he leaves unbothered. Pure does not want Bow, but he must pretend to help Waan be angry enough to tell her how he feels and call him out. 

Both Itt and Pure are both helping Pai and Waan to become better and confident. Unfortunately just like Itt has issues with miscommunication; Pure’s flaw is his reputation and his repeated words that he likes sex over real love. We see it in episode 10 ; his reputation/ ex show up to hurt Folk because he’s no longer focused on him. In the end Folk makes up his mind that Pure sees him only as a plaything and he accepts that Pure doesn’t care about him like that. In Folk’s mind Pure set up the whole thing with his ex in that scene because he said this is what he and Pure used to do with other playthings (they shared their fuck buddies) that’s why he called him a bad person.

Second Pure’s reputation hurts Folk because of the text where he is pretending to be a heartless player for Waan. Folk does not know what he’s doing so he misunderstands and believes that Pure is using him as a plaything. All the feelings he was starting to feel is a waste and all they’ve had so far is only a joke. 

Both Itt and Pure’s cause of their predicament is their secrecy. They believe by keeping things a secret, it would help them achieve their goals but instead it led to misunderstandings and hurts to their lovers. It ended up making their lovers hate them even more. That’s why we see the mirror image of both Pai and Folk crying it’s all dramatic irony and misunderstandings. Both these couples are requited but they don’t know it because they only believe what they’ve seen or experienced with their lovers, Pai believes Itt hates him and won’t forgive him and is straight so can’t love him, and Folk believes Pure is a player, won’t take him seriously and won’t love him either. It’s painful and ironic when it’s the opposite both Pure and Itt towards their lovers are 100% devoted to them. And that’s what’s funny and sad about the whole thing. But you know what this is my favourite trope so I love this storytelling. And I love both couples devotion to each other, and their ways of showing love. Now all we need is for Waan to finally lose his cool so Pure can tell him the truth.

Is Pure the best thing to happen to BL since WinTeam? 

Probably. 

Okay, this is some new version of the word “comforting” that I for one can get behind 100%. 

Do I have to accept we have a rake redemption arc coming down the romance trope pipe line? 

Yes, I accept it. I don’t care anymore I just want to see playboy Pure go all dorky for the sweetheart boy who is totally not into him. 

Could we just have a spin off series with these two making a total hash of any kind of relationship yet still staying friends in that big epic messed up way we all had in college? 

Because I could sit on a couch for 17 hours and watch just that kind of drama. 

I love these characters so much. 

We haven’t seen anything like them before in Thai BL and they make me SO HAPPY.
