Fandom Problem 4215:

Seeing people create character analysis for male villains and label it "a case study in toxic masculinity". But it's not even that. The villain is simply just an abusive entitled asshole. That's not exclusive to toxic masculinity or anything else. They're just a bad person.

Tonight something made me honestly roll my eyes so hard I could have sworn they'd get stuck there.

I'm not going to go into detail about it because honestly this won't really matter to me in the morning but I just have a few things to say.

Everyone is allowed to like different things.

Just because I don't like a certain character or media doesn't mean that you're not allowed to like said character or media.

Trying to insult me for not liking something you like makes you look dumb.

Just because you like a show doesn't mean everyone else does too, and to try and insult someone over a fucking difference in opinion is childish.

Western fans really need to learn the concept of values dissonance. Especially when they come into wuxia fandoms and say things like "this character is GNC so obviously he's trans". No, he doesn't conform to modern American ideas of masculinity. He does conform to traditional Chinese ideas of masculinity. (His GNC-ness is that he... wears colourful clothes and writes poetry.) No Chinese person would ever think he's either GNC or trans.

TFW when an American mistakes a homophobic slur used in my homeland for our culture having a third gender. It has nothing to do with nonbinary people and everything to do with homophobia. They might as well say America has a third gender called f*gg*t.

People end up hating shows, movies, comics, etc and brand them as "cursed content" not for bad writing, not for being weird or obnoxious, but because they were popular. When something gets too popular, it usually either attains a massive fandom, or a massive amount of hater bandwagons. And that leads to toxic fandoms.

There's usually nothing wrong with the media in question. People tend to despise said media because a youtuber said it was trash or someone on twitter started a fandom war because of it. In the end, most "cursed" medias aren't even given a fair chance and are branded as bad. It has nothing to do with the media and everything to do with popular interaction.

Fandom problem 4230:

Saw a post on twitter from a so called "critic" who has it out for one ship in particular in the show he "critiques" (i put those in quotes because this guy only skims bits and pieces of the show and complains about it). He has such a hate boner for the ship that every time the voice actors of that ship make a post about it he always jumps on it and tries to tell them "You're a professional voice actor. Stop talking about your ship and voice act."

As if the VAs aren't human and can't talk about things they love. It's annoying as shit.

You can always tell when a hot take comes from an Asian-American who's never left America and probably never watched Asian media in their life. My fave: a Cantonese speaker complaining Chinese characters speaking 'racist Asian-sounding gibberish'. It's a Taiwanese film. They're speaking Hokkien.

Antis act like it's a moral failing for non-Korean speakers to be unsure how to pronounce K-pop singers' names. Meanwhile I (Scottish-Russian) grew up in Seoul and no one there ever tried to pronounce my name properly. And it didn't bother me because my name has sounds that don't exist in Korean, like Korean names have sounds that don't exist in Western languages. Linguistic 👏 limits 👏 have 👏 nothing 👏 to 👏 do 👏 with 👏 morals 👏
