Remus and Hope Lupin a e s t h e t i c s
Dear, dear Mama, now that we're older We can see the load on your tired old shoulders Mama you're a trooper, Mama you're a soldier Mama, you mean a lot to me
Remus. /ˈɹi.məs/
In Roman legend Romulus and Remus were the founders of Rome. Remus's name may have originally meant "twin," from Old Latin *Yemos, *Yemonos (“twin”), from Proto-Italic *jemnos (“paired”), from Proto-Indo-European *yemH-no- (“connected, paired”), from *yemH-. Cognate with Old Norse Ýmir, Sanskrit यम (yáma, “twin-born”). The initial 'R' was probably introduced to make the name sound more like Romulus. Remus also means oar in Latin.
With a mutual love of Roman mythology, Lyall and Hope couldn’t help but notice that their middle names, Marcus and Sylvia, were very close to Mars and Rhea Silvia -- the parents of Romulus and Remus. Combined with the other ‘wolf’ meaning names in both their family trees, they couldn’t resist the temptation. Hope now sees the irony. Lyall still doesn’t.
John. /ˈd͡ʒɒn/
English form of Iohannes, the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious", from the roots יוֹ (yo) referring to the Hebrew God and חָנַן (chanan) meaning "to be gracious". The Hebrew form occurs in the Old Testament (spelled Johanan or Jehohanan in the English version), but this name owes its popularity to two New Testament characters, both highly revered saints. The second of these is the apostle John, who is traditionally regarded as the author of the fourth gospel and Revelation. With the apostles Peter and James (his brother), he was part of the inner circle of Jesus. This name was initially more common among Eastern Christians in the Byzantine Empire, but it flourished in Western Europe after the First Crusade. In England it became extremely popular, typically being the most common male name from the 13th to the 20th century (but sometimes outpaced by William).
Remus was named after his maternal grandfather, John Howell.
Lupin. /ˈluːpɪn/
Lupin is a name whose history is connected to the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from when the Lupin family once lived in the settlement of Lippincotts in Culmstock in the county of Devon. Lupin is the surname of a wizarding family, though they have Muggle as well as magical heritage.
Lupin is derived from the Latin word lupus, meaning "wolf". Lupin or lupine is also the name of a flower, and the latter is an English adjective meaning "wolflike". This alludes to the lycanthropy in the family.
