She would remember that day forever, the day her heart stopped beating.
Lana had parked her electric vehicle about 500 meters away from the gates to the Mule's residence, as usual, so as to avoid any unwanted attention. She got out and headed towards the entrance. It felt as if the heavy clouds leaned directly against her bare shoulders, as the humidity, unusually high for this time of the year on Kalgan, suffocated her.
She pressed the button. And pressed it again. And again. And again, as nothing happened. She hit the steel gates with her fists. And hit until the pain spread throughout her whole body, as tears blended with rain.
You said you would never do it!
She walked past still dark rows of people, some of whom she recognized, most complete strangers. Pritcher stood in the first row, straight like a statue, probably the successor. But it would never be the same.
Her black hood covered her eyes and rendered her unrecognizable. But that didn't really matter, as her lover had made sure their secret would remain hidden, even to the sharp minds who might have noticed a spaceship pilot trying a bit too hard to ignore the First Citizen.
They both knew it would come to this. The signs had started about one year before; the feebleness; the blurry vision; his body becoming more frail; the familiar crutch.
What would she do from now on? She had no idea. She would disappear for a while. Maybe take refuge in the sky, in her brand new private space ship. She had told him it wasn't necessary; that she would have much prefered to stay with him until the very end.
Kalgan felt lonely all of a sudden, and not for the first time. Maybe in the darkness of the sky she would find solace and recharge her batteries until it was time to descend again. Maybe she would see a falling star or an incandescent comet.
On her home planet people believed that the first celestial body object seen after a loved one's departure was their reincarnation.
Don't break an other planet, First Citizen.
This series of scenes has developed a plot of its own. Inconsistent and holey, but a plot nonetheless.
If you follow the tags "#fanfiction idea" and "#foundation oc" it makes more sense, the scenes are more or less in chronological order.
If I manage to solve the inconsistencies and plot holes of this series, I intend to turn it into a fanfiction. But I can't promise anything, it's just at planning stage.)
