           lizzie  audibly  groaned  when  she  felt  his  arms  envelope  her  frame.  as  much  as  she  would  love  to  stop  and  allow  him  to  cuddle  her  forever,  they  had  more  pressing  matters  to  deal  with.  that  seemed  to  be  the  constant  with  the  salvatore  school.  “  no,  mg,  seriously?  ”  she  scoffs,  trying  to  edge  herself  away  from  him.  the  siphoner  was  extremely  burnt  out  from  the  past  couple  of  days,  so  it  really  was  taking  the  last  drop  of  self  control  to  not  melt  into  his  embrace.  still,  he  doesn’t  seem  to  be  budging  anytime  soon.  “  look,  i  know  you’re  trying  to  prove  a  point  or  whatever,  but  ---  oh,  screw  it.  ”  she  finally  gives  in,  practically  falling  into  the  vampire  with  a  weary  smile.

                “  it  doesn’t  take  a  genius  to  notice  that  there’s  something  on  your  mind.  ”  it’s  a  simple  admission  with  a  hint  of  teasing.  hope  takes  a  place  next  to  the  werewolf  on  the  sofa  and  offers  him  a  soft  smile.  “  i  know  that  things  haven’t  exactly  been  rock  solid  lately,  what  with  all  the  monster  drama  and  you  nearly. . .  dying.  i  just  want  you  to  know  that  i’m  here  if  you  need  to  talk,  even  if  we  both  admittedly  suck  at  it.  ”

                   she  feels  like  someone  has  kicked  her  hard  against  the  chest,  knocking  all  the  wind  from  her  body.  her  heart  begins  to  race  and  she  finds  her  gaze  falling  to  her  hands,  sweat  beginning  to  appear  on  them  as  a  sudden  nausea  washes  through  her  body.  at  first,  it’s  denial  ---  a  shake  of  the  head,  a  step  forward  with  desperation  etched  over  clearly  pained  features.  it’s  something  that  lizzie  would  never  in  a  million  years  have  pictured  him  saying,  words  that  inspire  emotions  within  her  that  she  has  not  allowed  herself  to  feel  in  a  very  long  time.  they  were  happy,  weren’t  they?  things  had  been  good,  she  had  improved  and  they  worked  on  their  tumultuous  relationship  over  time.  lizzie  feels  like  a  caged  animal,  the  room  suddenly  suffocating  her  as  she  turns  to  the  only  solace  she  has  ever  known  standing  in  front  of  her.  she  reaches  forward,  taking  his  hands  in  her  shaking  grasp.  

           “  you  ---  you  don’t  mean  that.  why  would  you  say  something  like  that?  it’s  not.  .  .  it’s  not  funny,  mg.  ”

          lizzie  is  almost  motionless,  rigid  in  her  stance  at  the  words  that  leave  his  lips.  it  wasn’t  fair  how  he  always  knew  the  right  thing  to  say,  the  glint  in  his  eyes  a  beacon  for  her  to  fall  deep  within.  how  long  had  they  danced  around  this?  only  recently  allowing  themselves  to  feel  what  they  so  desperately  sought  from  one  another.  relief  begins  to  soothe  it’s  way  around  her  body,  heart  rate  once  beating  a  little  too  fast  now  beginning  to  return  to  a  reasonable  pace.  he  means  it!  he  always  means  it,  and  she  always  falls  further  down  that  same,  goddamned  rabbit  hole  that  was  her  love  for  milton  greasley.  “  well,  you’re  in  luck.  because  there’s  no  one  in  this  world  that  could  make  me  happier  than  you,  mg.  ”

             explosive  outbursts  coupled  with  a  recently  acquired  immortality  did  not  seem  to  go  all  that  well.  lizzie  felt  unhinged,  feral  ---  her  emotions  were  already  difficult  enough  to  control  as  a  regular  witch,  but  now  as  a  vampire?  she  was  bone  chilling.  tears  stream  down  her  features  as  the  lights  explode  around  them,  her  hands  in  the  air  as  she  tries  desperately  to  calm  herself  down,  looking  over  to  the  bodies  on  the  floor  of  those  who  had  tried  to  harm  her  aunt,  another  sob  racks  the  air.  bonnie  was  more  than  capable  of  looking  after  herself,  although  lizzie  acted  out  of  instinct.  blood  is  smeared  around  her  face,  down  her  neck  and  coated  on  her  hands.  “  i---  i’m  sorry.  i...  i  thought  they  would  hurt  you.  ”

           “  isn’t  it  obvious?  ”  the  heretic  replies  with  a  dry  smile,  leaning  in  to  gently  trace  her  knife  along  his  neck.  being  turned  into  a  vampire  by  hope  had  really  done  a  number  on  her.  everything  had  been  too  much  to  bear,  the  emotions  overwhelming  her  until  they  could  no  longer  be  tolerated.  lizzie  always  felt  too  much  rather  than  too  little,  mg  was  a  prime  example  of  that  fact.   “  i’m  doing  this  to  you  because  i  liked  you.  i  don’t  know  why,  i  mean. . .  maybe  i  was  blinded  by  that  cute  face  of  yours,  but  it’s  okay  now  ---  do  you  want  to  know  why?  ”  she  leans  closer,  a  smirk  coating  her  features.  “  because  now  i  feel  nothing  at  all.  ”

       his  words  incite  a  roll  of  lizzie’s  eyes.  the  siphoner  was  sat  beside  him  on  a  brick  wall  not  too  far  from  the  school,  hands  fidgeting  together  as  she  wills  herself  to  find  something  to  say.  if  a  higher  power  existed,  they  really  loved  putting  her  into  awkward  situations.  lizzie  could  barely  count  the  number  of  times  she  had  alone  with  rafael  since  their  tumultuous  start.  things  had  resolved  by  themselves  with  time,  as  most  matters  did,  but  still  ---  she  felt  icky.

      “  look,  raf.  that  was  at  a  vulnerable  time  in  my  life  and  if  i  observed  correctly,  yours  too.  we  were  both  fucked  up  in  the  head  and  i  was  biting  off  more  than  i  could  chew.  i  guess  i  always  had  a  tendency  to  like  the  people  who  i  knew  wouldn’t  ever  go  for  me,  and  i  was  a  mess  about  it.  actually,  the  whole  thing  was  embarrassing.  i  know  you  went  through  a  lot,  too,  so. . .  maybe  we  can  just  leave  it  at  that.  it’s  just  weird  to  think  about  it  after  all  this  time.  so,  we’re  good,  right?  ”

              it  seems  as  though  every  single  aspect  of  growth  she  made,  every  ounce  of  blood,  sweat  and  tears  had  been  ground  up  and  shoved  back  in  her  face  as  if  none  of  it  truly  mattered.  the  rage  this  girl  manifests  within  lizzie  is  unlike  nothing  else.  jaw  sets  as  her  hands  ball  at  her  sides,  blue  orbs  narrowing  in  an  irascible  nature.  how  dare  she?  after  all  the  antagonizing,  the  low  blows,  lizzie  is  honestly  surprised  this  is  the  final  straw.  she  raises  her  hand,  striking  alyssa  across  the  face  in  a  fit  of  rage.  “  you  feel  bad  for  my  mother?  that’s  rich,  at  least  i  have  one.  ”  she  falters  after  a  few  seconds,  realizing  the  weight  of  her  words.  this  was  not  the  person  she  strived  to  be.  lizzie  extends  a  shocked  yet  composed  expression  ---  the  ultimate  contradiction.
