After screening at Cannes in May (where Bennett Miller received the Best Director award), Foxcatcher opened in theaters on 14 November 2014.
Based on the true events of John du Pont's murder of the US wrestling coach Dave Schultz in January 1996, Foxcatcher received critical acclaim and was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor (Steve Carell), Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), and Best Original Screenplay (E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman).
Foxcatcher (2014) dir. Bennett Miller
Bennett Miller insisted that the main actors not joke around between takes, and that they weren’t allowed to socialise outside of work.
Mark Ruffalo also said that he was genuinely scared of Steve Carell when he played John du Pont.
During one of the wrestling scenes, Channing Tatum’s eardrum gets popped by Mark Ruffalo, but they kept acting anyway and you can see it in the final cut.
Before a particularly moody scene, Miller asked Steve Carell to write down on a piece of paper the thing that he most hated about himself, and then to put it in his pocket. Miller then told Carell, “Just know that that piece of paper is where, if I was a dick, I could just grab it.”
Steve Carell studied endless footage of the real John du Pont, and read about him as much as possible. Carell had, as you know, previously been in movie roles of comedy and comic characters. Bennett Miller later said he cast Carell because he thought “All comedians are dark.”
