Recovery
I broke my leg nearly a month ago (1 month on August 9). I had surgery 3 weeks ago (July 13) and I've done nothing since.
I went straight from the splint to the walking boot, which I hated. It was big, bulky, made my ankle twist in funny ways, and was incredibly uncomfortable (at times painful). So, since I trust myself not to put weight on my leg - ever - I took the neoprene splint out of the boot and have been wearing that, along with the straps and pumping it up with air. When my doctor found out, he wasn't happy, but this injury sucks and I'm not about to make myself uncomfortable. The way I see it is that as long as I'm not twisting it or putting weight on it, I'm not doing anything wrong. If my theory proves to be wrong and I fuck it up even more, I'll take the blame, but if this works then I'll be glad I didn't put myself in a super uncomfortable boot for the entire duration of my recovery.
I am getting minimal pain. Sometimes it feels like the plate wants to push its way out of the incision so that is uncomfortable, but I think it's often because I pump the thing up with air so much that it's just pressure on the incision instead of the plate putting pressure on the incision. I get some pulling when I use the crutches - if the splint isn't on perfectly and occasionally I get some incision (the ligament side) pain.
I obviously can't walk or drive or pretty much do anything although I have been given the OK to shower without the splint only that makes me very uncomfortable and I freak out about even setting my foot down (I have a shower chair to make it easy and so I can keep my balance since I don't have to support myself on one leg).
I see my doctor again on the 7th and he's supposedly going to give me my ROM exercises to start doing. *sigh* ROM is not weight-bearing and it appears as if it'll still be two weeks after that before I can even start standing on my bad foot. Recovery is going to be long and I have a feeling it's going to suck. I keep searching online and seeing horror stories of people walking with a limp up to a year after the break.
I'm still not working because I'm avoiding going up the steps at the office and most days I can't get to and from work. Basically, I have a way to get there and back half the week and a way to get there the rest -- I have no way home so that poses a problem. So, I'm couch surfing.
Upside...I get to watch all of the Olympics live thanks to online streams. I guess it's good because I don't have TV and can't even watch the crappy NBC coverage at night. This is pretty much the best time to have this happen -- for the next week I'll be entertained at least half of the day...that's not so bad.
I need to post pics soon. I don't have one of the actual break but I do have a photo of the xray, the staples in my leg, and my leg once the staples were removed. I just need to get them off my phone and onto my Tumblr...Oh wait. I have the app. I'm bright. Pics coming soon.
