I have to walk such a line in the classroom between being authoritative and certain but also giving them room to react that I just go fully tyrant when I see an online take. Like so:

I do think there is something to the fact that most people only read it once when they’re in school (understandable, normal) and then not again but IT DOES KIND OF DISQUALIFY YOU FROM SPEAKING ON IT TOO MUCH

what does “the who’s who of who’s that is poised for the attack but my bare hands paved their paths” mean???

I know that I am partly influenced by Zach the swiftologist’s youtube analysis (LOL) but I think it means other/less famous celebrities following in her footsteps. So the expression is a play on the “who’s who” —like the who’s who of upper society/the very rich—but it’s like …. they’re all people no one really knows or cares about (wanna be Z-listers) so they’re the who’s who of who’s THAT.

And the paving their paths thing is just like—how much she’s cleared the way for people, how long she’s been in this business, the model she’s put forward for people to follow. And they’ll use the path! But they’re still ready to jump down her throat/switch sides/turn on her at a moment’s notice.

I didn’t know what I thought before but tbh I don’t think I like it?? I like it in flashes! “It felt like something old, it felt like something holy, like souls bleeding so” is really good and I also LOVE “what felt like fate give it ten months and you’ll be past it” (especially as sung by Taylor) and I also like the way the melody lifts when they sing “curse and a miracle hearse and an oracle” or however it goes but as a whole it feels both lifeless and confusing to me. The vibe is not specific enough in either detail or mood so I don’t really know what’s going on and then it’s not catchy enough to make up for it and overall it’s just kind of the equivalent of eyes glazing over.

((I also think the Robert Bly/ironic/false prophets bridge is kind of clunky. There are too many syllables at certain points.))
