Is he, you know, Uncle Frank?
Frank Bledsoe (Uncle Frank - 2020)
WHY is no one talking about Uncle Frank???
It's a new movie on Amazon Prime and Y'ALL.
I could go on for ages about the writing of this movie! The interactions are so realistic and natural. The main couple is a professor, Frank, and his long-term partner Wally, and they have this LOVELY interfaith relationship and Wally is just unabashedly a man of faith (and he's poc and Muslim!!) and that interplay adds so much!!
I seriously love Wally so much. He's so fun and caring, and is the type of man that I'd want to find out my uncle has been in a relationship with.
And the way Frank and Wally's relationship is portrayed!! They love each other, they've been together for 10 years, but they fight and have arguments and tease each other. And all throughout the film you're just reminded of how unconditional their love is for each other and it's just so, so beautiful.
It's all told through the eyes of Frank's niece, Beth, when she, Frank, and Wally take a road trip from New York to South Carolina for her grandfather's funeral. Family drama ensues.
I WOULD LIKE TO STRESS AGAIN. THE WRITING!!
And the acting oh my goodness. Paul Bettany as Frank is just. Absolutely marvelous.
Y'all there's no bury your gays! Like, yes, you will cry, but the couple lives and the ending is SO LOVELY and just please PLEASE watch it. And have I mentioned the interactions are all so lovely and realistic? I got the feeling that I was watching some magnificent play, that's how good the dialogue is.
Okay I'm done gushing. Please go watch it. And if anyone wants to talk about it I am MORE than willing to!!
Paul Bettany in "Uncle Frank"(2020)
as Frank Bledsoe
UNCLE FRANK
IMDB Summary:
In 1973, when Frank Bledsoe and his 18-year-old niece Beth take a road trip from Manhattan to Creekville, South Carolina, for the family patriarch's funeral, they're unexpectedly joined by Frank's lover, Walid.
Nonsensical Thoughts:
Gorgeously yee-haw, written and acted beautifully. As a Queer Northern-er raised by/around Southern-ers. I felt this. Sophia is wonderfully genuine in her role and Paul has great comedic timing. The relationships had real depth and were not the butt of the joke.
Uncle Frank was felt raw yet hopeful, and so freshly written.
My Letterboxd
Uncle Frank (2020), the movie you are. What a GOOD movie. Also had the big 3 (internalized homophobia, substance abuse, religious guilt)
I just love Frank and Wally so much <3 and Beth ofc
