"Operation Initiation", "Crowing Pains", "Right to the Heart"

Another one of those stories that Archie went back to, resetting the same script from 1950 to 1961. And one regular recurring figure -- sorta baldish under that hat -- is dropped. And we set things up for Jughead to join a fraternity – or fraternal order or something – things that existed in high schools apparently – following the cruel initiation ritual. The Lofty Order of Crows.

Complications ensue.

But Jughead finds his way. Except come the tree drop.

Dialogue direction fixed in post. But what comes next? Archie has Jughead thinking murder cult! Because Riverdale was closer to the source material than people think.

The funny thing there is that I am not sure what murder cult conjures in 1950 or 1961, where by the last edition here – at its change… Well, there’s the Manson Family. Maybe why it needed changing. Also see –

We are getting overly sensitive in this century. Can no longer deal with metaphorical murder cults and death sentences. Complications arise.

Ah yes. Miss Shapely. A recurring character in Archie Comics. She shows up. Randomly. Over the course of 1950 through 1982, A Riverdale school employee named Miss Shapely is in … Well, comics dot org does not index the characters for this 1950 appearance, so I can’t say with any specificity… but it is sporadic. She even gets her customary “Riverdale” write-in, or maybe just in the comic book tie-in.

Note that I have to say “school” and cannot specify “high school”. Because oh sure, she was employed at Riverdale Elementary School just as Mr. Weatherbee was principal there in the woebegone world of Dexter Taylor’s Little Archie. And here there comes a strange divergence of storylines, and either going back to elementary or forward to 1974, some things have happened either before or after.

Spooked, Fred Andrews sends his son out to pick up the pipe from the guy he thinks wants to pulverize him.

But. Little Archie is hot for teacher.

And so is Mr. Weatherbee.

That’s where the plots converge. Yes. Dreams of inappropriate affairs.

And, you know--

Given that this all happened when he was an elementary school principal, sometime in the future, you would think Mr. Weatherbee would have learned and remembered the outcome. Hard to say he doesn’t have this coming.

Mentally place this as the fate which awaited Mr. Weatherbee with the plumber / retired pro wrestler. It is probably a superior sight gag then the quick punch whammy.

The Improved Order of Red Men by Susan Zehnder, Education Director

In August 1904, Michael J. O’Hara, in charge of records for the Improved Order of Red Men (IORM), left Elmira on a train for Utica where he planned to transfer and board another train destined for Buffalo. The IORM was holding its annual state convention and delegates were gathering. Elected in 1898, O’Hara had been a popular record keeper and he fully expected to be re-elected to the position. He wasn’t. He never made it to the convention. A few days after not showing up in Buffalo, he surfaced in Connecticut at his brother’s house. He claimed he had met a fellow delegate on the train, someone he didn’t know. They chatted amiably and the stranger offered him a drink.
